The UHMW plastic can be found in 1/4" some places, but it is a little flexible for my taste so I go to 3/8" or 1/2" but then that starts getting away from being a simple task.

Clarification needed. Since the table insert cavity is only 1/4" deep, how is the thicker stock you mention used?

He rabbets the edge down to 1/4"(with an opr). The thicker portion left inserts into the through area. The thin thickness is only needed around the 'periphery'. This also results in a 'stouter' insert.

Took me a bit to find the posting but if have the time it might be worth the effort to read all of the information at:
https://forum.shopsmith.com/viewtopic.php?t=1482

If you just want some pictures:

I did this adjustment with the old OPR but I would have no problem doing it with a router table... In fact with a simple jig and a hand held router would be just as easy.
