Hey Mike!
Thanks for starting this thread. I am now an expert at different ways to cut strips. But what to do with my new found knowledge? I know! I will make a lantern. I will take the plans that you provided and take this journey with ya.
However, I need to make some changes. Nothing drastic, just a tweek here and there.

Depending on how many sets I decide to make, I may have extra glass. I have enough for 4 sets. I'll let you know.

Since this project is on my "to-do" list as a gift for my mom, I'd be willing to buy a set's worth of glass from you.

Just a FYI for those who might find the clamping bar a bit to small to clamp what you want to clamp on the jigs of the type sketched below here is a good way to do it.

Also want to mention a piece of psa sandpaper can increase your clamping ability should you find you need it... attach to jig and away you go.

And one more thing which I think I have mentioned before, use a rip blade. Rip blade do a square cut and have no "set" and deep gullets to carry away saw dust. Even a good combo blade my have some set to it and will leave a lot more blade marks.

OK the pieces are color coded. The yellow is the original or new jig you build or have. The wood looking piece is your workpiece. The green is a wider clamping board and the red is a scrap the keeps the clamping square and tight. (Drawing is near scale but not to scale).

Hey Mike!
Thanks for the offer of glass, but I think that I am going to recycle some old picture glass and do a plain acid etch. My rails are coming along nicely. I am only making 1 lantern. I had an old piece of wood (Cherry I think) I cut the cherry to about 15" long and used my fence to cut the strips. I cut a 1/16" groove down the middle of my rails and glued a strip of Walnut in them. I sanded them flush with a drum sander in the quill.

There is an old shop saying that goes something like this:
You never have extra glass, what you have is replacement glass.

For those of you with smaller children or are planning on a family in the future take heed of this. Also if you or others in the family have a tendency to drop things....
