Speaking mandrel's information please

Hi,

I'm looking for some information which I think I read here (maybe not?) about buying a mandrel that would fit in the shopsmith 1/4" router chuck along with maybe a few other parts to get to a functional attachment for doing some turning (not necessary pens). As I recall these parts were very inexpensive... $4-$5 range.

So if anyone knows the post of which I speak or the information I'm looking for would you please provide information?

How can you go wrong with this mandrel from PSI. It works great for me and I think the ¼" collet from SS costs more than the whole mandrel from PSI.

Is this what you are looking for? Sold at PSI $7.95. It is shorter that other mandrels.

woodcraft sells a "replacement mandrel shaft" for $2.99. it does not come with the knurled nut, but they also sell one for a $1.50. or you could use any 1/4" 28 nut.

Thanks to all of you but I think this sounds like the one I was looking for so special thanks to bettyt44720.

I'm already getting an order ready for woodcraft so I can save myself some postage by sticking this on that order.

i think there is a woodcraft store within a few miles of your house. been there, the woodcraft store that is not your house. lol also i will be doing a craft show in chanahon (spelling ?) on march 6. hoping to meet ya.

Hi,

Yes there is a store in Woodridge and it is not all that far away but I find I normally just do my ordering on-line. (I have had a couple of issues with them like them telling me they had the feed belt for my drum sander in stock but when I got there they couldn't find it even after I had ask them to hold it for me and I was there in 30 minutes.... I guess some of that was my fault because I didn't have a spare on hand... They did get one in for me the next day so it wasn't too bad. Just a waste of my time and gas . That and few other things that happened means I only go there when I want to look around and compare things or happen to be near by.)

If you get me the details on the craft show I see if I can work it in. We are trying to get an appointment for my father in law that is on Mar 2 moved to Mar 16, we will be gone for at least 10 days up in the UP for that plus so I can not say for certain when this will all come to be. Also have to avoid major snow storms... I've gotten snowed in a couple of times for a day or two on trips.

I just finished putting my order in. Order the set of 3 replacement parts (141502, 141503, and 141063) ($2.99, $1.99, and $1.50) from Woodcraft.

By the time I got all my stuff it came to $75.95 which was above the amount needed for free shipping today (Free shipping over $75). The postage was $10.99 so I used that code rather then the catalog offer of $10 off any order of $75.

I'm also interested what comes in the box of UHMW plastic they sell. Not sure it will be worth it yet or not. Anyone else ever buy the #4-1/4 box? (145529)

I got the parts in a while back but it has been a bit to cold to do much with them until today.

I thought I would share some pictures of what I've collected and them see if I can get any additional help on what else I will be needing to make use of these items.

Pictured here is a 1/4" router bit adapter (I don't know if this is an old shopsmith item or a ???? from some other source, anyway it doesn't look like the current one and uses odd size setscrews and has only one setscrew where the router bit would mount???). Then the items I got from the Woodcraft catalog. The compressing stop nut seems to have a lot of holding power, one of the things I was wondering about. The knurled brass nut looks like it would work but I picked up a few nuts that fit with less height.

Next I stuck it together on the shopsmith. I mounted my Nova live center with the small 60 deg point for the end stock. The rest is just as shown.

When it warms a bit more in the garage I was thinking of turning a couple of lamp pulls to give it a try... then maybe if I get some extra $ get a pen set to try. So other then the lathe tools is there anything else I should be shopping for??

looks perfect. that setup is nearly identicle to PSI's mandrel. myself i don't use the compression nut. i just add extra bushings or wood spacers.
