Replacing the Speed Control Assembly.

I'm the new owner of a SS 500 (61526) and yesterday was the first day I was able to get to see what all was going on with it. When pluged it in a turned it on it started up just fine but when I went to adjust the speed iI noticed that the back dial was not turnng, So I removed the front hande and seen that it is striped. Any help will be appreciated.

It sounds like the speed control assembly is working but the indicator is not changing, Is that correct?

If so then it is and 'easy' fix of replacing the speed control dial or the speed control handle depending on which is stripped.

Both parts are available from ShopSmith.

there is one on ebay (120530156102) that i'm watching right now, i had also went to ss's web site and found the parts. if the one on ebay will work i sure hope i can win it. my main thing is getting them alighed. thanks

I knew he has been doing that for some time and I always was a little curious exactly what process he used. He has a great set of pictures there now that makes it very clear.
I don't need one of those right now but I am thinking about looking through my stash for one that might look a little tired and send it to him just so I can have one with the steel gear on hand. Hard to beat that price. I guess if something weird were to occur to SS (heaven forbid) I suppose those dials could quickly become a little scarce

I have had a number of speed control knobs repaired by this gentleman. The service is fast and the quality is very good.

thanks guys, just had found that repair listing on ebay and was wondering if that is the way to go. yal sold me so i will send it out tomarrow. i had told a friend that i had found the mark v and that i gave five hundred bucks and asked if thought it was to much, he said what red blooded male would not want one in his garage. thanks (sure am happy i found this site!!)
