Saw Guard Help needed

I could kick myself
I did not take any before pics. I got the machine in a big pile with a couple of pickle buckets of extra parts. The motor had literally burnt up and the thing had been weathered pretty badly. I started cleaning a part here and there always planning to take some before pics, but then I got a chance to hit a few parts with a bead blaster and a few with Walnut shells. I couldn't pass up the chance and I was in full rehab from then on. A lot of the painting was done because the aluminum parts had so much surface corrosion that it gave me the creeps to touch them. I think it was a texture thing, but the paint is a really great solution. I will have to see how it holds up, but it looks good and seems to survive the rip fench moving around pretty well.

More on rebuild
I almost forgot to mention the speed dial, knob and inspection port cover. Those were really absolutely white with corrosion. Nothing too deep, but you couldn't read the dials and again, they were gritty or powdery to handle and I just couldn't take it. They "turned out" really nice. I chucked them into my Midi lathe and turned them with sandpaper until they looked like new and then repainted them. Not too bad a result. The hardest part was painting the numbers back into the speed readout. Lots of paint and lacquer thinner wiping the excess off the shopsmith logo and other "paint free" parts.
The lathe came in handy on the casters also. They were rusted till they were siezed in place. A little bead blasting, then a hammer to break the pistons free got it all apart. Then the pistons went into the chuck and got turned till they were like glass, got a good coat of wax and got re-assembled. I did notice this afternoon that the casters are reversed so I need to take them off and swap them to the opposite legs, but that might wait a few days.

These were REALY ugly when I got them and after cleaning, and even walnut blasting one, the didn't look too much better. I decided to try a coat of hammer finish paint on them and it worked like a charm. Once they cured I waxed them with paste wax just for that little extra slip. Anyway, you can see the assortment of guard parts I have left after discarding the obviously wrong upper that was bigger that the whole rest of the tables combined. Also, you can see the arbors I have. I believe them to be a standard 1 1/4, 2 X 5/8, 1 X 1/2 Router, and a 1/2 Shaper arbor. Right? I guess this is as good as any time to ask, what order all these spacers/washers go on the arbors?
You have a '500' Mark V with an older two slot table.
Do not recognize the saw guard in second pix, but it obviously clamps to the quill. Upper portion ????
The 'plastic' lower guard is the stripped down 500 disc sander version of the 510/20 lower guard.
The upper left arbor appears to be a 5/8" molder/shaper arbor.
The upper center arbor is a router arbor.
The upper right arbor is a 1/2" shaper arbor.
The lower left arbor is a 510/520 saw arbor(keep in mind the larger blades will not fit the 'extra' left slot).
The lower right is a 500 saw arbor.
The ss looks great! Good job!
The main consideration re spacers, is 1) full threads on nut 2) nut misses the trunion bar 3)keyed washer under the nut

The angles were wrong to see, but did you get the about 1/2" wide grey plastic ring that goes between the headstock and the carriage on the rear way tube.
It's function is to quickly locate the blade mounted on the 500 arbor in the center of the slot. Since you got a basket case, I thought I would ask. While not essential for operation, it really speeds up changes.
The machine really looks sharp. Good Job!!:D

Spacer?
I did not get a spacer. Do you have a part number? Is it simply a 1/2" spacer that I could locally fabricate?jimthej wrote:The angles were wrong to see, but did you get the about 1/2" wide grey plastic ring that goes between the headstock and the carriage on the rear way tube.

Both 58" arbors appear identical. I guess they are both 510/520 arbors? Other than the 500 guard not fitting, is there any other problem with using them on the 500?
Oops
Good catch, I guess I should swap that when I swap the casters. So much for doing assembly with the shopsmith turned around backwards to me, huh?pennview wrote:I noticed that the wingnut for the headstock carriage lock is mounted on the back of the headstock. It would be more convenient and perhaps safer to mount it in its proper position on the front of the headstock.

I have used spacers cut from straight radiator hose stock from the other shop. I like two of them, one on each way tube. It can save a lot of possible damage if you give the thing a gung-ho flip from horizontal to drill press mode and you forgot tighten the headstock lock well...
It cuts easy with a very sharp knife if you wet the blade with some 50%-50% Murphy's Oil Soap and water.
The blade slot alignment thing doesn't matter much to me since I seldom use one for a saw anyway.
