I think I’m missing something here. I want to convert my 1954 Greenie to a two bearing quill like Dave5358 but there is only room for a single bearing on the end of my quill shaft and in the quill housing. Bill Mayo mentions having machine work done on both the shaft and housing but Dave does not. From Dave’s photos, it’s obvious that the end of his shaft where the bearings ride is much longer than mine (mine is 2 ¼”), so is there a different shaft and housing for some early Greenies or do I have more work ahead??

All Greenie/Gilmer quill shafts and housings are the same. Dave machined for 3 bearings on the quill shaft and housing. He does talk about the lathe being used for this task. I only did machining (additional 11mm) for 2 bearings on the quill shaft and inside the housing trying to keep my machine costs reasonable.sliver wrote:I think I’m missing something here. While performing some maintenance, I decided to re-tension the quill feed. I removed the quill and waxed the mating parts, but after reinstalling the quill was worse than before and was binding. I noticed that as I approached the third turn when re-tensioning, the spring was making a "creaking" noise. So I removed the whole assembly and sprayed some bearing lubricant into the spring casing. Now the quill feed is smooth and effortless! Although the spring is somewhat encased, no doubt that very fine sawdust has accumulated over the years and probably got dislodged when I released the tension.dave5358 wrote: Reassembling Quill Feed: When I tried to reassemble the quill feed, I noticed that nothing wanted to slip together.
CAUTION: When removing the quill feed shaft there is a spherical washer that will fall into the motor pan. (resulting in having to drop the motor to retrieve it!) So put your hand in the access hole to catch it as you pull the shaft out.
