Look what you started, Gary! You should be proud! Lots of guys have given lots of advice and references to learning or improving turning techniques!

This is a wonderful thread!

I'd recommend watching "Woodturning Workshop" on PBS, there's lots of good ideas for projects and step by step close ups, along with tips on using lathe chisels etc.

Learn To Turn by Barry Gross... chisels down the best learning guide I've ever seen. Starts off with a description of each tool and how to use it properly. At the end there are several great starter projects. I've also purchased "How to Turn a Peppermill, Focus on Design" by Ted Sokolowski; another great instructional tool. It covers the design factor of turning a lot more than tool use, but it is still a very informative video.

Or look into some of the local woodturning shops if there are any around your area; sometimes they'll schedule classes with professional woodturners. Luckily there is a shop here in Belgium that does just that. In September Jimmy Clewes is coming out to teach a class. He's teaching an advanced level class which is something that I was a bit hesitant about; I'm in no way going to be able to keep up with the pros. When I talked to the store owner and told him my predicament, he talked to Jimmy and I got word back that I'd fit right in; he'd even tailor some special projects for me! How perfect is that? :)

So all you have to do is get a ticket to Belgium around the middle of September and I'll get you a seat in the class!

That's great. I can't imagine how informative this class is going to be. It's pretty tough to find classes like this over here... especially classes that are taught in English! :D
