Shopsmith's NEW Ceramic Sandpaper Discs

My understanding is Jim McCann is the engineer behind the newer shopsmith products we buy. He also does the quality control test on things that come off the line.

Any one know if they can be used for sharpening chisels etc.?

Am thinking someone has really hit on a good idea with the ceramic. Have no need for them immediately, but am intending to go that route for next replacement.

When I first read the information my thought was "I gotta have some of these." Then I saw the PSA information. Changed my mind. I have been using the velcro attachment system for a while and really like it.

Not sure I want to go back to PSA even if the discs work as much better as they say. Could change my mind if folks rave about them here but for now I'll stay with what I have.

I would imagine the 120 grit would be the best suited for sharpening. That't would most likely explain why the discs are PSA only. I have used ceramic sharpening sticks for years for sharpening knives. I already have two disc plates, one for velcro discs and one that isn't. I figure the new discs will save money over the long term.

Jim McCann, a quiet and unassuming kind of guy, is an extremely talented woodworker. He has been with Shopsmith for many years and is their most indispensible employee.

Annother long time ex-employee told me that if Shopsmith ever ceases operations, Jim McCann would be the last one there to turn the lights off.

I saw the email and watched the video, too. Looks cool, but I'm waiting for velcro. I would think that the adhesive would likely wear out before the disc.

Different strokes for different folks! I hate the velcro(spongey feel, dimensional instability). Yes, I do have multiple discs. Only one has the velcro adapter pad attached(only tried the one). I do use it but only occasionally,

I'm a velcro person so I will wait. I will also wait for finer grits.

The idea is super.

However at this time I have no need to sand down a two by four to dust.

If they had a finer grit PSA disk I could use for metal sharpening I would buy that also.

Is that a power pro he is using? Sounds different but hard to tell over the dust collector.
