New to me 1954 Greenie

Well I drove down to NJ this morning and picked up my Ebay winning 1954 Greenie. It is a bit neglected and will need to some work but for $99.99 I think it was worth the trip. I got a Mitre Guage safety handle which I did not get with my Mark VII and also an added bonus I did not expect.

The unexpected bonus was a flex shft accessory the I did not know the Shopsmith came with?? Is this an aftermarket attachment or did Shopsmith at one time have this as an optional accessory??

The machine will require a complete teardown and cleaning/rebuild I am pretty sure. The power cord will need to be replaced as it is cracked badly, it comes from an outlet box that was mounted under one of the legs that had a power outlet in it. The machine came with a wide assortment of saw blades most of which are junk but the arbors will be of use. It also came with the moulder insert and moulder with several settings of moulder knives so that is nice as well. I think it will be a real good acquisition once I am done refurbing it

Here is the flex shaft it has a 5/8" female to attach it to the headstock and a 5/8" male on the opposite end to attach whatever you want to attach I assume. I can see this being very useful.

I jut drove to NY to pick up a Greenie a friend of mine was simply gonna scrap. I didn't pay anything for it and I would call it fair condition. Top tubes are rust free. Lower tubes have some rust on em. It also came with a jointer, a jig saw, and some special wood turning pieces. I believe I now have at least one of every model, which includes 2 10E's & 3-4 ERs. All I need is a Brownie and my collection will be complete. The bug hit me hard, but I was buying from whatever it cost me for gas and tolls to around $75 to $150 on average. The first ones I got, I paid much more for as I had the bug really bad. But usually people have other things and I ended up getting a South Bend 9" machine lathe in good condition with all the accessories which included an induction furnace which although I possess the electronic skills to resurrect the beast, I'm afraid I'm going to be out of luck for the accessories which were used for various tasks. No mas! I also crippled myself trying to move the induction furnace & lathe into my garage. I have a bad back & problems already, but I'm not one to watch the world go around. I use leverage & a hand truck far more than when I was a young buck. No more. I am done buying. My workshop is insulated with closed cell foam and in a month or two, completely sheet rocked. I plan to possible cut one down to use as a two tool station. Haven't decided. Oh, in two weeks, my sister is driving up from Florida & is going to drop off two 10ERs I had down there. Bought my first 10ER down there & then someone on Ebay had a completely restored 10ER which I stole for $150. I believe I have almost every part one could have for a Shopsmith except for the flexible shaft like you got, the paint sprayer, or the Mk II, Mk VII, radial arm saw or there is another power station that also has a saw function. I've only seen one of those from an Ebay seller in Philly who has everything.

There are several guys in addition to Shopsmith who rebuild the headstocks and do good work. Jacob Anderson has some videos out as well as Shopsmith has on YouTube & Saw Dust sessions where I really learned a lot. All you gotta do is Google & then sort through all the hits. Enjoy your Ebay win & if you don't want to create problems, make sure you have enough room before you end up with more than will fit... I'm sure than a number of guys here who can help you with parts.

I recently bought a Mark VII and when I saw this Mark V close to me with no bids I decided to bid on it and won it. I figured for short money I could at the very least part it out. I totally rebuilt my Mark VII in the past several weeks so i will probably do the same with this one as well. It is fun to resurrect something from the scrap garveyard and put it back to work. The restoration process is the real fun part for me taking stuff that looks like crap and making it new again I really enjoy that.

The flex cable was an optional accessory, At one time it was in the catalog with the ER's and the MKV's not too many of them around but they show up from time to time on Ebay.. Sound like a great find. I keep looking for a greenie but not yet. Have 6 ER's a brownie and the MKV I bought new in 95 that started this whole mess.
