off on switch

off on switch

i have a problem with the main switch on my mark 5 no response when switched on,cleaned out the switch now it keeps blowing fuses any ideas would a new switch solve the problem

A new switch may help. Unless ya have a short elsewhere.
SS 500(09/1980), DC3300, jointer, bandsaw, belt sander, Strip Sander, drum sanders,molder, dado, biscuit joiner, universal lathe tool rest, Oneway talon chuck, router bits & chucks and a De Walt 735 planer,a #5,#6, block planes. ALL in a 100 square foot shop.

I would bet that beeg is correct; you most likely need a new switch. But, this is a very uninformed statement. The information provided tells us very little except that you have worked on the switch.

What model Shopsmith do you have. Does this unit switch both the hot and the neutral side.

UNPLUG the Shopsmith.

If you have (or can acquire) a multimeter, measure the resistance between the two flat prongs on the Shopsmith power cord. Alternately, switch the Mark V switch on and off while observing the multimeter resistance reading. It should change from an open (infinity) to a short (very low resistance). If it does not change consistent with the switch action - beeg is correct. You need a switch.

on off switch

i have taken the switch apart inside the switch there are two metal strips i cleaned these up and replaced them witch way do they go back in:confused:

Aha! They go back in the same position as they were when taken apart!

You need to figure out how it is supposed to work, then assemble. This is far more easier to say than do!

Perhaps getting a new switch is a more reasonable(less time consuming/less frustrating) option at this point.

Make sure you understand how to attach the wires before 'turning it on'!
