Mine is a Mark V.

You betcha' I've thanked him. I love this machine. It's the best tool I've ever had and doesn't cost me a lot of space either.

Perfect for a hobbyist like me.

Adapting lathes

Post by vzandt »

My other lathe has a 1X8 threaded spindle. I already had the adapter to put my chuck on there, so I bought a 5/8 to 1X8 adapter for the shopsmith and a 1X8 pen mandrel. No I can more my chuck and the pen mandrel from lathe to lathe.

My chuck is a Barracuda sold by Penn State Industries. I know an adapter came with it. I'm going to have to check it out.

That's about it though. Looks like I can get fully functional for less than $100. That's so cool.

I'm very impressed with the quality of this machine. Reckon I'm not the first to mention that though.

I'm very impressed though with all the plans I can get for free and such. Amazing.

Rik;
If your pen mandrel has a #2 Morse taper it may have come from Penn State Ind. the same as the chuck. Try to remove the #2MT from the mandrel shaft. Double nut the threaded end of the mandrel and hold the nuts in a vice and then try to unscrew the taper part. Mine came off yours should too.

Some people tighten the mandrel down in their drill chuck. I purchased the SHOPSMITH adapter from PSI

http://www.pennstateind.com/store/PKM-CL.html

and have been very happy with it.
