Jumping in on the discussion concerning speed controls. My SS Mark 5 (seriiel number 266934) bought used in 1975 finially had a problem that I could not solve, so yesterday I started to dismantle it. Removed tne motor, which is working just fine, then found that the speed control bearing had frozen up completely. Reading through the previous messages I did read that I need to buy the entire shaft 50 some dollars. Finially my question???
Are these shafts universal for all Mark 5's
or is there anyplace that can replace just the bearing.?
Thanks, Anne in Tucson

I'm not sure what you are referring to as the speed control bearing. Pictures would help, baring that perhaps you could identify the part on this picture.

Control Sheave Bearing
Yes, all the Mark V Control Sheaves are the same design. I have found that a new Control Sheave may have tighter tolerances and bind on the idler shaft or the sheave vanes touch/rub againest the Idler Sheave vanes due to key way variances. Buying both the control sheave and idler sheave/shaft from Shopsmith eliminates any problems. Also replacing the bearing eliminates any tolerance problems.anneb3 wrote:Are these shafts universal for all Mark 5's
