I finally upgraded from 500 to 510

Hi everyone

I've been reading these forums for a couple months now and really enjoy the discussions. I've had my SS (new) since 1986 I think. It wasn't too long after I bought mine that the 510 upgrade was introduced. Since then I wanted one, but didn't make the move until last week

. I got an upgrade kit from ebay that just arrived yesterday. Makes my SS look so much bigger now

The thing is that there was no manual for this kit. I didn't think to ask for one before I purchased and the seller doesn't have it either. So, until I can get a manual from SS I'll have to ask questions here.
My first question is how do I square up the rip fence to the saw blade? Also, is squaring the miter slots to the saw blade the same as it is for the 500 table (by loosening the bolts to the trunnion)?
I look forward to posting completed projects in the future but not until I finish something I'm really happy with. I'll just continue to lurk here and learn.

Yes, you align the table by loosening the bolts that hold the trunions to the table. Once that is aligned then you would do the fence. The fence has two screws under the front of it that you loosen. You will only be able to tighten one of them while it is on the table. So once aligned, tighten the one screw. Then carefully remove the fence and tighten the other screw. Check alignment.

After the table is aligned to the blade, I align the fence to the miter slot. I have made a runner that fits tight on the miter slot. With that runner in te slot, I loosen the two screws in the fence, slide the rip fence up against that runner, clamp it there, lock the rip fence to the tubes and then tighten the screws. One screw can be tightened while the fence is clamped to the runner. The other is inaccessible and you have to remove the fence to get to it. Once this has been done, recheck for alignment and then you are done.

You'll enjoy your new 510. If you haven't already, consider getting a second extension table and 5' tubes.

Thanks for the replies too. I can get it now I'm sure. I also found this video on youtube last night: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Volf5YoT2U&feature=related. it's a 3 part video of a lucky couple unpacking their brand new SS 510 and the alignment steps.
Now I need new saw arbors and I discovered that my router/shaper fence doesn't fit. I can fix that though.

I have a VHS video that came with my Mark V. It is different that these on youtube but both are good sets of pointers. Thanks for posting these links.

However, like many other users, I have developed my own set of procedures that I use and am teaching to those family members who are interested. The objectives are all the same, only the procediures have been changed to protect.....well, whatever.

Well, those videos were a good start. I got my main table adjusted right on, and the fence is perfect, but the extension table isn't lining up quite right. It's fine for now because I don't have any large cuts planned for the near future. I'll wait for the manual to come and read through it for more info on alignment.

You will probably need some shims to get the extension table 'perfect'.

In what way does your extension table not align? Either the table top is not in the same plane as the main table OR the Table Tubes (247) are positioned so as it make it difficult to install the Extension Tubes.

Hi Dusty, it's both those issues. one corner in the front is lower than the main table, and now there is a slight binding when I try to insert a bar. it was worse before I loosened the tubes and slid the bar in.
As for the lower corner, I did try shims, but it still didn't bring it level to the main. I'll order a manual and DVDtoday, so I will get into that when they come. As I say I don't plan to cut any large pieces any time soon. Also, since the corner in the front is lower, I feel that's the best possible imperfection and one that I can still work with if I needed to.
Now I have another question about the miter guage. On the 500 table I would square the guage up by laying it upside down on the back side of the table and but the guage to the table with the bar in the miter slot. the grooves are on a perfect 90° to the back and it was a quick way to align the miter guage. The question is: can I still do something like that with the 510 table? I don't think using the bar to square the face of the miter guage is a good idea.
