Lathe Chuck Options

Post by dutchcraft457 »

Greetings guys! My first time in this forum. I've got a Mark V that's been sitting around and I'd like to start turning bowls, boxes, plates, and more on it. As for a chuck, the guys in my club recommend a Talon chuck which SS sells, but I'm wondering if it's possible to get it from someone other than SS as long as I have the proper adapter, mostly because of the price issue. What's being used out there and what would you recommend? Thanks!

I use a SuperNova2, I originally purchased a Nova chuck from Shopsmith and purchased many different jaws so when I wanted to upgrade it made sense to go to the SuperNova. Most vendors make a "Shopsmith" adapter sometimes called a 5/8" female or other generic names to avoid copyright and liability issues.

Welcome to the forums Keith. All ya need to do with whatever chuck ya buy. Is to make sure ya can get a 5/8's plain adapter for it. The talon chuck would work fine.

I have used both the Barracuda chuck sold by Penn State Industries and the Oneway Stronghold chuck. I like them both. The Stronghold is a lot heavier and a lot pricier.

I have the Baraccuda chuck (from Penn State) and am very satisfied with it.

Thanks for your reply. I should've come here sooner instead of trying to re-invent the wheel with people who aren't familiar with the ShopSmith. They actually have a Baraccuda package on sale right now, so I'm glad you got back to me. I'm still a novice turner & don't really want to fork over nearly $300 to do this if I don't have to.

If I could impose, another question, have you found your SS to be a little low for turning? Having taken a couple of classes at my local Woodcraft store, most of my turning has been on their machines, which are noticeably higher than my SS. Have you found that to be an issue for you?

Again, thanks for your input.

NOPE, haven't found it to be to low for me. IF it is for you, just raise it.
