10E S/n 541

G'day all.
I have just acquired a 10E S/n 541. Twas against explicit instructions from she who must be obeyed, and breaches space limitations as I already own a goldie.
The 10E was on ebay, I couldn't help myself I hate seeing old machines go to waste! $105.00. So now I'm wrestling with the whole, to restore or not. Like most of you, I have too many projects on the go, but, it came with a pile of accessories for lathework, some spare saw blades, a live centre (Whatever that is) and other knick knacks which I recognise from the other forays onto Ebay. This completely justifies the purchase ... in my mind.

Can anyone tell me approx when this machine was made?

I bet your machine comes from 1947 but others more knowledgable might be able to narrow down the month. Sounds like a nice buy!

Are you sure it is a 10E? It has several 10 ER attributes. A pix of the sn medallion would be educational.

I think toolcollecta has an 'Aussie" version made under licence.

I have a 10e as well, which is serial #1869.

I got a very tattered (and waterlogged) owners guide with it, which id for a 10ER....very confusing.

Unfortunately most of my logo plate is not legible (due to a mishap) apart from the stamped serial, and the 10E bit, but the "built under licence" plate is unblemished strangely enough.

I do have one photo of it, which was taken prior to the mishap.

The "built under licence" plate states (rather proudly)

All that makes it unlikely the date of manufacture will be determined by any of us! Interesting cone pulley! Does yours have 5 steps, and what size? Motor RPM/HP??

That does explain the 'extra' plate.

For a while Magna used the 10E plate and added prefix to the SN. At some time these prefixes became an indicator of location of manufacture.

I would assume that Magna 'dumped' some of their excess 10E logo plates on to the NSW firm.

My shopsmith has a 4 step pulley, and a 'flameproof' motor with an isolating switch, which is independent of the power switch.

I suspect that its a replacement motor, but I will post some identifying shots, for those 'Aussie' owners to compare.

I have attached some pictures of the beast which will be in my journal documenting the restoration process.

This is much more fun than I anticipated
