Planer knives alignment

From your last comments, I take it that I got a good deal on the planer? My wife and kids thought I was going Shopsmith crazy because in three months I had bought three Shopsmiths. The deals were just two good to pass up. The first one I bought for $600 It is a model 510 and he said he bought it in 1989 but only used it for about two hours since he had it. Absolutely no wear inside or out. A rich guy that saw it a show and thought he needed it. The unit is in mint condition. I wanted some attachments so when I saw another 510 on sale that had a jointer for $900, I called and asked how much for just the jointer and he said you can have the whole lot for $300. This machine was missing a few parts, but I got it up and running and sold it to a guy for $500 (I kept the jointer). I saw another machine with a bandsaw and bought both for $200. Unfortunately, this is an old greene that was not taken care of and some of the guts were taken out. The bandsaw is in great shape, but I am not sure what to do with the greene. I may use the stand to store my accessories, and sell the motor etc. How much is the motor 3/4 hp. worth? It there a market for a greene housing?
I live in Ontario Canada near Hamilton if anybody is interested.

Hi Owenbrent and welcome to the forum.

You got your planer at a great price...

Just a note as you are a newish member here. Selling parts on this forum is not allowed... This is a shopsmith sponsored forum and they get to do the selling here:D.

The headstock is basically the same on all MK 5's and MK V's... by which I mean they are interchangeable. An old greenie headstock can take a new motor, new poly-v upper end components, a new double bearing quill and be upgraded to be 'the same as' a new headstock. and they will all fit on the same base assemblies.

There is a lot of discussion about whether or knot these 'upgrades' are needed, but it can be done. It could also be reworked and kept as a spare in case a breakdown occurs.

I currently have a 520, a MK 5 shorty and a base assembly that I use for holding un-mounted SPT's and a work bench.

So the uses are there. Enjoy.

The storage idea is excellent! You might want to shorten it though. Be aware if you do that the bench and way tubes may be different sizes(1 3/4", 1 7/8").

I was considering telling you to part out what you do not need, but you later mentioned it yourself. Being in Canada can present problems with that. I defer to my Northern neighbors re that 'issue'.

Just do not try selling it 'HERE"!

P.S. Yes Ya got a fantastic 'deal' on the Planer! Especially if it is a stand mount with 1 3/4 hp motor!!! Since ya were pushing the workpiece, i assume it is a SS mount without auto feed. Still a fantastic deal.

Sorry about breaking the rules guys. I was trying to see if there is a market for greene parts, if not, I would scrap them or give them away to a Shopsmith fan because they are just taking up space. Garage space is at a premium and my wife actually wants to use the garage for the cars (especially in the winter).

JPG4504, the Planer I bought is a pro planer with the variable feed control. Since the blades were not set properly when I bought the planer, I had to set the height of the table so high that I had to force the wood under the feed roller in order to get the wood close enough to the blades. Now, since setting the blades correctly, the planer feeds the wood perfectly.

Great forum, I will be learning a lot.

Has anyone verified a planer blade setup that was done with with tool by using a dial indicator to see how close it came? Curioius to know. Part of me says the tool could be very accurate but another part of me questions it.

I have never used the dial indicator on the planer blades. The alignment tool seems to work well and since I have always been somewhat intimidated by the planer, I don't mess with it much.

However, I have thought about building a fixture that would be used with the planer cutter bar (blades installed) to do the alignment the same way as I believe Shopsmith must do them.

I don't recall where I got the idea but I believe that Shopsmith aligns the blades in the cutter bars before they are installed into the planer. Doing this with two or three dial indicators could provide for a very precise alignment.

I am so glad that I save everything. Finding it when I need it is my problem. This was in an email special from Shopsmith
