New SS Mark V 500 Owner Need HELP!! :(

I just became a proud owner of a Shopsmith Mark V yesterday. I am very excited to get using it. I have already put a blade on the table saw and fired it up. Now is where I have a problem.

The Blade is stuck on the spindle:eek: I can't get it off for the life of me. I have unscrewed the little screw but it just won't budge. Anyone have any suggestions on getting the darn blade off of the spindle????

FIRST!!!
Unplug the unit. turn it on. if nothing happens (it shouldnt if it is unplugged):D
Try mounting the sanding disc on the back "spindle". Then put a screwdriver between a couple of the teeth on the saw blade and pinch it to the table. rotate the sanding disk while puling out on the saw blade arbor. it should 'screw' off.

once it is off, check the spindle for burs and file it smooth as needed.

If you have removed the set screw that holds the arbor on the spindle shaft then put some penetrating oil in the set screw hole and let it soak in then try to rotate the blade and the sanding disc that has been installed on the left hand end of the spindle in opposite directions. In my opinion from what you have described the blade arbor has rusted on to the spindle.

From your initial post, I am under the impression that YOU put the blade(and arbor) on the output shaft. If that be the case, it ain't rusted on, but you may have tightened the arbor set screw onto the non-flattened part or end of the main shaft. That would have likely created a burr on the main shaft making removal stubborn.

If the arbor was already on the output shaft and you mounted the blade to that(blade has a 5/8" hole and arbor has nut on the end) then in may indeed be seized by rust.

What we do not know here, is what type of arbor is 'stuck'!

Bill Mayo's suggestion above would apply only to a 1 1/4" arbor that has a left handed nut between the blade and the headstock end.

If you have one of the 5/8" arbors, they have a right handed 'nut' on the end of the arbor away from the blade and headstock.

Regardless of which type you have, the set screw MUST be removed completely.

If rust is an issue, penetrating oil and soaking is necessary(wd-40 is NOT a penetrating oil, liquid wrench/pb blaster/kroil,K1:D . . . are!).

With the set screw completely removed, the only thing preventing the removal is whatever is holding it(burr/rust/???). Pulling and twisting is what will get it off.

The difficult part is doing so with out increasing the damage, and pulling it straight ! SOFT faced hammering may help, BUT 'Keep it moving STRAIGHT". Rocking(back and forth straight, Rotary or in/out NOT cocking) once started may help. Prying is a very reluctant last resort(be willing to accept any caused damage to other parts).

P.S. With the set screw out, look down into the hole and see if you see the round part of the shaft or the flat. If the round part, you probably did put a burr on the shaft. BTW the set screw should NOT have a serrated end or a cone end, but a FLAT end!
