I just bought a new control sheave for my greenie and noticed the keyway in it is not as large as the original. I havent tried it on the machine yet but my guess is its not going on. Has anyone run into this problem?
I am working on a repair to the original using a new bearing and a button I machined to fit the new bearing. The old button was evidently made into the bearing at the time of manufacture. The is a groove that I believe acted as the race for the ball bearings.

Long term wear enlarges the keyway in the control sheave, especially near the end away from that button/bearing. The key is also subject to wear and may have a ridge worn into its sides. I would look/measure the key and keyway before thinking it won't fit. Do not base anything upon worn parts.
I think it will fit!(unless the key is damaged)
That 'groove' you are looking at is the inside of the outer race of the original bearing which was force fitted into the end of the sheave and peened. You need to remove it prior to inserting another bearing. The 'button' is peened/swaged into the inner race before the bearing is put in the control sheave. They are not meant to be 'repaired'. Howsomever if the keyway in the control sheave is worn, I would not recommend trying to salvage it. I know what happens when that slop gets too big and the sheave vanes jump over(like skipping over a tooth on a gear) It wasn't pretty! Creates a lot of abnormal stress!!!!

The groove I am talking about is in the button. It is not wear it was machined in it.
I finished the repair on the old control sheave. Its got a new bearing and a new button pressed into the inner race. I made the new button on the lathe this afternoon. I loctited and peened the new bearing in place.
There does appear to be some dimensional difference in the control sheave keyways. I will post again after i try it.
