Which Upgrade? 520 or Power Pro?

Roger that Robedney! I've gotten the bug to polish the shiny bits and repaint the legs and for some strange reason a have a hankering to get the casters all polished up. Now what that will do for my wood working skills is a connection I haven't made yet but I think somehow there is a connection. And all those SPTs to acquire... It's odd that the SS has my affections more than any other tool or brand to date. I'm glad to have traded what I had for something with the support and following of the SS. Very refreshing!

I think Paul's signature line(I got a fever, and the only prescription...is more Shopsmith!!) pretty well sums it up!

I'm curious - why spend more for the PP upgrade than just about any good contractor's saw or the new hybrids? Even as much as some cabinent saws.

Again - Welcome to the Forum!
There are multiple functions available with the Shopsmith, among those is a lathe. In addition to variable speeds there is reverse. Very helpful for turners. The Shopsmith, with the PowerPro, allows for routing and shaping as well as sanding and molding. Contractor's saws and hybrids don't offer all those abilities. Also the slow speed is available to use forstner bits in both vertical and horizontal boring.
The Shopsmith is much more than a table saw! Speaking of saws, it is as good as most and better than many!

We need to come up with that sticker. I bet the forum alone would keep the printer busy. I vote for one for my Truck. By the way it is an old Ford with the wing vent. Remember them. Haven't like a car or truck since they took them out.

How many of the 'manufacturers' of those 'good contractor's saws' were around 50+ years ago and are still supporting those antiques?

As Charlese has pointed out, what other operations can you preform with that contractor's saw.

The first thing to understand is that the ss is not just a table saw.

The second thing to understand is that having variable speed over a substantial range is just not 'typical' and is quite desirable.

The power pro 'update' eliminates the most problematic attributes of the 'current' headstock/motor.

Finally add SPT's to the plus side of the 'WHY' ledger.

Yes it is a ss thing! Lotsa misinformed/misguided folks out there who do not understand. We have been referred to as FANATICAL! Yes, tis true, but NOT irrational be we!

I miss the cowl vent! Direct, not through a bunch of hot ducts. Only thing between indoors and outdoors is a bug screen.

Oh and when it is raised, it becomes an air scoop! Disappeared just after WWII.
