Revision "B" on the above sketch will be using a hardwood hand screw to hold on the sacrificial pieces. The fence was there in the event the plunge cut wanted to kick to the right. If your saying no issue there, I'll give it a shot. My plan is to make 2 passes, first one with router bit only up 1/2 way just to get a feel for it and observe for quality of cut.shipwright wrote:You have winner, but lose the fence. Also GOOD double sided tape might save your piece a screw hole.

My err.... Realized I cut out the 'L' before cutting the groove. I'll be using a custom shoe in place of the now missing material for the grooving op.reible wrote:Just for the fun of it I dug out the issue with this project........
The piece should be left whole (without the cut out shown on Mikes part) when doing the groove. .....

If it did kick Mike, and with the small amount of bit you have exposed it won't, you don't need anything around for it to jam on or to ricochet off of back into the cutter. So I still say lose the fence. Generally in a case like this if something starts to go sideways you don't try heroics to save it you let go and get out of the way. Called a FOLIA event.

As far as the hardware you can get a simple General 6" Stainless Steel rule cheap at a hardware store and yes they are magnetic... same thing for the magnet, cheap at the hardware store, I got a 10 pack a month or so ago for a project for less then shipping from most places.

Since I've already got 4 six inch horizontal read stainless steel rules (scales), decided to shop around for a vertical read ruler for this setup gage, like the one they show in the photos of it. I could only find 1 company that offered them. All the big name ruler / scale companies only advertised horizontal read. The really nice thing about this company I located was they don't have a minimum quantity buy AND they offered FREE SHIPPING on top of that!!

Asked how much it would be and they said they'd send me a quote. Seemed kind of formal but who cares. Here's the quote I got....they said they are looking forward to my order!! I'll probably go with the expedited quick delivery just cause I hate to wait.

Dear Michael,
Thank you for your inquiry.

Interesting.......I hadn't thought of that at all. I LIKE IT!!! Still have plenty of 'stuff'. That's a bummer when one starts to forget about his own capabilities!!:o I can do it!!!shipwright wrote:How much more if they throw in the factory? Or is that what they thought you were ordering? Why don't you make a custom brass one like your 10ER badge?
Paul M
EDIT.....Oops.....can't find any magnetic brass!!

Glue that thin brass onto a steel base! I do not think you can match their accuracy! For woodworking, that accuracy would be redundant anyway.
Where are you obtaining the brass bar pieces. I was thinking a hobby store.
Yeah I like this project! Actually considering doing it. Soon as all these parts get reassembled!
BTW do you REALLY need those six numbers rotated?

Wow $149.00....now I think that is carrying precision just a little too far!
I've got a couple or more 6" rulers kicking around in my tool boxes. Maybe I better clean those drawers out and get all my rules together in one place. I might be able to sell a couple and use the money to boost the build rate on my PowerPro fund.
Mike, can I sell you a couple really nice magnetic 6" rules.

Ya. Brass on steel. I also thought of that driving home from work. Broad minds follow the same path......or something like that.JPG40504 wrote:Glue that thin brass onto a steel base! I do not think you can match their accuracy! For woodworking, that accuracy would be redundant anyway.

Hobby shop is correct for getting the brass strip stock. Hobby Central here in San Diego. Cheaper than McMaster-Carr.
The 6 main inch numbers isn't my primary concern but I'd like every 4th 32nd's rotated like in the center shot. Plus, I think it looks cool.
