Excuse me there's a bolt under my table

But hey seriously what are all these extra bolts on the trunion for??? I just upgraded to a 510 table and both of the 510 table came with extra bolts on the bottom side of the trunion and I can't for the life of me figure out what they are for.

Today I did get my new 510 setup all perfectly aligned. Well until I take it apart and stick it into drill press mode or use the band-saw or something. Now that I have upgraded to the 510 options all I can think of is upgrading to the 520 Pro Fence. Well that and how I can get a 18" bandsaw for cheap.

Are you talking about the adjustable 45 degree stop bolts? Pictures will help.

There are NO extra bolt holes so it seems that there might be something you are missing! You indicate that you have completed the table alignment. If so, then you have used the bolts that are there as adjustable stops for the table tilt. I guess, as has already been suggested, some photographs would help. Good luck!

Methinks your all 'perfectly aligned' procedure did not include the table 45/90 degree stop adjustment.

Not sure I understand how putting it in drill press mode will 'unalign' it! Ditto bandsaw use.

You DO understand new rails are required for the 520 fence to work!

LOL. Uhm yes I am missing something that is why I asked the question I was pretty exhausted when I wrote the post and it looks like it rubbed some people the wrong way.

You boys sure do get all riled up as soon as someone says something that you think is a shot at the Mark V, which by the way my post wasn't meant to be.


Let's see here.

I aligned the table using the instructions from the Sawdust sessions. I do not have any further instructions for alignment. I must have missed the part of the video where he mention the 45 degree stops.

Putting the machine in different positions could potentially cause it to go out of alignment because I building my workshop and don't have anyplace to put the tables so they have the very real possibility of being knocked around which could very easily cause the legs to get knocked out of alignment. I am no where near as smart as you guys but in my experience whenever I have moved around a finely tuned machine there is always the possibility that it can get out of alignment. Same would happen if I had a nice cabinet saw on wheels and was moving it all around my shop.

Lastly, yes I am quite aware of what is involved in upgrading to the 520. There is a a whole package under part number 555983 that looks like it comes with everything needed to upgrade to the 520 pro fence. I don't like the 510 fence alignment system at all. For someone of my low IQ it is very difficult to get it square to the blade. But then again I have spent my entire life as a scumbag white collar professional and all this machine stuff sure does make my little brain hurt.

Keep in mind the differing skill/knowledge mix of participants in this forum and sometimes the blunt language needs to be used to get the attention of one slightly off the path. It is done for the benefit of not only the 'direct target', but also all those others(lurkers) who are in need of that info also.

I just found it a bit unusual that having just installed a 510 'upgrade' that you would be mentioning upgrading to the 520 Pro Fence. I was concerned ya might have thought all you needed was the fence. Why the intermediate step? Ya needed the table?

If you push the 510 fence against the front rail to square/align it, then clamp the front wing clamp first then lastly the rear lever clamp it should be positioned correctly and repeatably. The little foot on the back of the fence needs to be adjusted so that in sits firmly on the rear rail when clamped. If the foot is not absolutely flush with the tube, it will give unpredictable/varying clamping positions.

OK so the screwing up the alignment is a storage protection issue - understand!

I question yer self evaluated IQ value!;) BTW it has NOTHING to do with the color of yer collar!:rolleyes:

Thanks for the reply JPG, I have been securing the fence to the table rear first so I will give it a shot and see if it works better for me.

I think it is amusing the way some folks on this board get all bent out of shape when they, usually incorrectly, interpret something to be derogatory statement against Shopsmith. I mean come on man nothing is perfect. I like the Shopsmith and am glad i bought one. But as with most tools there are some clear shortcomings. I think of them as trade offs. I know Nick Engler points them out in several of his sawdust sessions.

I have read quite a few posts on this board where folks pointing out these shortcomings are blasted by a few of the members. I can't for the life of me understand why some people are so touchy about the subject. Maybe they work for Shopsmith. Maybe they make a living selling Shopsmith machines or parts on Ebay. Maybe they are just pathetic people that have built their identities around their persona's on this board. But someone shouldn't be attacked for brining up something the see as a shortcoming. It is a topic that gets me pretty upset as it is one of the biggest problems facing our nation. The thought police who are always on patrol to punish anyone who tries to have an open discussion on a subject they don't agree with.


As far as my humor it is strictly there to point out when someone is acting like a jerk. I mean really how pathetic is it when some jerk feels the need to insult someone looking for assistance on an internet board. Really is their self esteem that low that taking shots at people on an internet board is all they have to boost their pathetic self esteem?

There is no good reason I should be alive today. God blessed me with some "Bonus" years to spend with my 7 & 8 year old boys. I am taking this gift as a time to build lasting memories with them. Because I am disabled there aren't many things I can do with them. So we chose woodworking. Since my background is in business Sales & Management I have quite a bit to learn. I have learned quite a bit in 3 months. I would say that there are very few people who had the amount of knowledge I do about woodworking 3 months after knowing nothing about it.

I have never felt the need to insult someone looking for assistance but obviously there are some on this board that do. In my experience this is something that older Blue Collar guys with low self esteem get off on. These poor pathetic idiots who respond to a request for assistance with insults on an anonymous board are most likely some pretty sad and lonely jerks. I have had some great interactions with some wonderful people on this board. Just like any board there are going to be a mix of pathetic pieces of crap, I just happened to get 3 of them to respond to my post.

I might not understand exactly what your problem was here, but I have fought the fence as well. Others, smarter than I, suggested milling a piece of stock to fit the miter slot and using that to hold the fence in place as you adjust and tighten it up. I now use that as part of my tune up routine. Until I started that, I found it wandered around every time I tried to tighten it. ( like teaching freshman line man to pull, direction and distance were an issue every time!) I had to learn the hard way to follow the directions even when they seemed silly. IE, the $20 feeler gauge from Nick's video. " I mean really, how much difference can that make?" Well, enough to make it impossible to move the table if you don't!!:o

Many people come here looking for help, and the many good people here gladly offer it. Attack free. Maybe you're misinterpreting something? Crushgroovin: I am sorry if I in any way said anything that you interpreted as an 'attack'. Lord knows my only objective was to be helpful and informative. As I noted earlier I do use blunt wording to get the needed attention of one who is wandering the wrong direction.

I get the impression that this thread is not the sole source of your frustration etc. I certainly hope that is the case. I Understand your observations relative to some other threads. However, there is some good natured ribbing that takes place here between folks with thick skin and it is done not to put anyone down, but to celebrate our common lack of perfection. To an independent bystander, that may appear as attacking/demeaning. Tain't meant to be so!

I am sorry to learn of your disability(perhaps yer nom de plume is indicative) and hope you do continue to consider the 'extra' time as a blessing.

One of the difficult things is to communicate with one with less knowledge of the subject since there is a tendency to not give all the details needed by that individual. In those instances a 'say whaaaa' response will get a more detailed response.
