Drive Hubs for cheap?

I need to get a drive hub for the accessory drive coupler on the Gearbox side. And being broke does not help either.

The guy I bought my 1956 SS from did not include it, so I am accessory-less. I tried a piece of garden hose, but it twisted to shreds in minutes. Help please.

Welcome to the forum. You should be watching eBay for items like this while being aware also that Shopsmith still sells parts.

Adding a little bit of personal information like where abouts you live just might be very helpful. You never now when that guy right around the corner that you never talk to is a Smitty who has a garage full of parts; somebody likes Ruggs or BillMayo.

Well you got the Eastern seaboard(close to the shore) covered! Can you think of anyone 'out west' Rob?

But I think I have that covered also. Go check eBay right now and you'll find a couple folks in CA who are selling.

In fact, I am waiting on a set of tubes from out that way as we sit here.

I'm in Nashville, TN area, and the guy I bought from had 2 SS's and I bought the runt (older-Greener and more work to get together). Price was right, but I've run out of cash and need to get this puppy making sawdust. I bought it to help me build electric guitars, and the bandsaw and drillpress were the main essential components. Since I've gotten it, I am very much interested in making furniture and lathe work. I am jazzed about the machine that is almost as old as I am!!

Garden hose will not cut it as a flex-drive but either single braid or double braid hydraulic hose will. Several tractor seeders made in the 1950's used it to drive the thrower disk (there is another name that escapes me at the moment).

Are you looking for hubs or power coupler?
Anyway, The parts are not all that expensive from Shopsmith.

I am going to try making a replacement for the time being. I bought a shaft set collar for 5/8" diameter shaft, and it is 1.125" od, with 5/8" diameter bore, and then an Oilite bronze bushing to squeeze in. I'll drill thur for the set scre to grip the shaft, and ream out so it'll slip on, and then hand file the notches for the plastic coupler to grip, and Voila. Should work until I can spring $25 for a new SS collar (and I only have $2.40 in it). Parts can rob the piggy bank. So if someone has an extra they're not using - email me and we can barter. Thanks.

The shopsmith output shaft is 5/8". I do not understand any need to 'ream'.

The coupler hub IS 1 1/8" so adding a set screw and 4 splines(grooves) should work.

I do not understand all that re 'an oilite bronze bushing to squeeze in'.

I assume you have the correct hub for the bandsaw etc. and a shopsmith coupler.

FWIW, a spindle hub is only $3.89 from shopsmith.
