Shopsmith Jointer

I have not been doing woodworking very long and so I purchased a used 1991 Mark V Shopsmith 500 which I love. I recently went on eBay and purchased a jointer attachment for it. According to all of the literature that I have found, the design of the Shopsmith and the jointer has not changed since 1953, which indicates that my jointer should fit onto my Shopsmith. It did not come with any manuals or anything but when I try to put it on the Shopsmith the posts are about an inch too close together to fit on my Shopsmith. Any help as to how to mount this thing onto my Shopsmith is appreciated (especially photos). The jointer model number is 505681-B. Thanks in advance.

The jointer will fit. The post can be adjusted. they are held in place by Allen screws.

Shopsmith has a jointer manual available (#556076) for $10 ([url]http://www.shopsmith.com)[/url]. You might wish to order one to help familiarize yourself with the jointer and it's uses. Also getting a copy of Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone has a lot of good information too. I recommend you obtain both.

And that vintage should have the 'eccentric' mounting post which allows adjusting not only the tube separation, but also the alignment of the shaft to the headstock output shaft. Note that the jointer shaft is 1/2" and the output shaft is 5/8". The top of the jointer shaft should be 1/16" below the top of the output shaft. The hubs should align evenly.

Thanks guys. I should have figured that Shopsmith would be adjustable. It does fit. I'll get the manual too. Now I just need to get the adapter, my wife is starting to complain that turning it manually is starting to hurt her hand.
