New purchase(maybe)

Can someone help me with this purchase, the fellow say's it belonged to his uncle, purchased new.

Here is a photo of the unit, he is asking $550.00 and is a 2 hour drive from my house...He says the motor runs very smooth and the whole unit was very well taken care of by his uncle.

If by ‘help’ you mean advice, I would say that $550 is bit much for a Shopsmith 500 with a bandsaw. $350-$450 is more reasonable. A lot depends on your location. Here in Ohio there any number of Shopsmiths for sale at any given time, but if you are out in the wide open spaces of the west, opportunities are rarer. I would be more patient and wait for a 510 to come on the market.

sorry I was not very clear, I was not sure which exact model it was also...
you say a 500...I can see holding out for something a bit nicer.

The bench tubes, sanding disk and looks like the BS table are rusted.

Depends on if that's rust or sawdust.
If it's clean and the speed changer works ok, I'd say $550 isn't bad.

I think this may be a location type thing. In my neck of the woods, I would pass on this machine. I would be looking to see the dust collector that goes with the hose in the picture and maybe another SPT like a jointer to be included to support that price. But in other areas of the U.S. and the world $550 for what is shown might be a good deal. The value is in the eyes of the purchaser.

It might be worth a look if you don't mind the drive. There have been some pretty amazing "treasure chest" finds in some old SS purchases. The unmentioned items can sometimes make a big difference to the go / no go decision.

You got that right, Paul. I just covered the cost of a 510 that included a planer, jointer, belt sander, dust collector and bandsaw just from the sale of items in the "bucket".
