Looking to buy a used shopsmith need advice/help

I'm looking at a used shopsmith for sale local. It's a mark V, 1 1/8 hp, 13.5 amp s# ss86714. I looked at the info SS has and it appears it's a 1981 model 500? Is that correct? I've wanted to get one for years and think I can squeeze this one into my budget. I really wanted a 510 or 520 but for a very novice woodworker will I notice much diffrence?

I am a newbie, too and welcome to the forum. I just bought two, used Shopsmiths last month. I had only planned to buy one. The first one I bought was missing a couple of critical items, a blade guard and a Jacob's chuck. I was checking out eBay and Craigslist to try and find those when I stumbled upon a second Shopsmith that had every major and minor tool I ever wanted.

I think the link with Nick's video has some tips on what to look for when purchasing a used Shopsmith. However, even if the one you get is missing a few pieces, these are often available directly from Shopsmith or eBay.

Good luck. I encourage you to take the plunge. I am really enjoying mine, and this forum is one of the reasons I feel Shopsmith is such a good way to go. Someone here has the answer to any question you could think about for either improving your machine, or for using it.

Anything you can build with a 510 or a 520 can be built with a 500. Perhaps not as easily or quickly, but it is certainly doable. I'm sure some others on this forum would say the same thing about the 10 ER. If it's a good deal and in your budget, go for it. You can upgrade later if you wish to do so. Just my 2 cents.
