I understand it is a greenie and it should have a DPST switch on it. Or am I missing something?

My Goldie has a spst switch!(original). Is it 'unique'?

I cannot remember an older Shopsmith Mark V that was not DPST (including one Goldie). The model 10/10ER also used the DPST switch. Now of course this is only a small sample size of over a hundred machines and statistically would not be sound. But based on my experience your machine is unique. Oh they ALL still exist! Waking them up can be a fruitless task at times!:D You have successfully raised a murmur of doubt. Perhaps it will awaken given more time. What bothers me is that I would have replaced it with a dpst as a general principle.

When wiring an older machine with the toggle type switch, was the neutral (white) wire switched as well as switching the black (hot) wire?

At the risk of waking up the wrong memory, my 'recollection' is that it was not. Only the line cord(one wire) and a motor lead ran to the switch.

Keep in mind these were created prior to the invention of faston tabs(1/4", 3/16") used with the switches and wiring in today's vintage.

I will 'inspect' the goldie later and correct if what is here(and a couple of posts earlier) is inaccurate!

The confusion for me is brought about by the fact that when I replaced the power switch on my 510 (which was twenty years old), Shopsmith set me a DPST switch that was in a bag accommanied by a couple jumper wires and and instructions on how to connect it using only one of the switch sections (as a SPST).

Somewhere along the line Shopsmith has abandoned the DPST wiring configuration. FWIW, I did not. I am still switching both the hot and the neutral. I was taught that concept in the Air Force and as they say - it is extremely hard to teach old dogs to do new tricks.

Contrary to the information provided by another stubborn user, on the machines that I have seen they used a DPST (double pole single throw) switch and did in fact switch the neutral. As I noted earlier you can get by with just switching the power leg and tying the neutral wires together.
