Motor will not turn

Motor will not turn
Model 510. I turned it on for the first time since I got it. The motor turns less than 1/4 rotation and then stops but sounds like it is trying to turn. When off, it turns freely. Any help is appreciated. This was my uncle's Shopsmith who passed away so it is impossible for me to check into the history of this machine.
Have ya cleaned it up and lube it yet?

It sounds like the motor was not operated for some time. The centrifugal start winding switch points gets sawdust/crud on the contact points which prevents contact for the start windings. I have a large rubber hammer that I pound on the motor pan with the Shopsmith in the drill press position to loosen any packed sawdust/crud that may prevent the centrifugal points from contacting. Mostly, I remove the motor from the motor pan and using compressed air, blow any sawust/crud from the motor. I make sure the motor coils are not burnt. The smell will tell you if the windings are burnt. I use the the existing power cord and connect the motor to see if it will operate. If not, then I disassemble the motor and sand/file the centrifugal points along with blowing out any remaining sawdust/crud. I have not found a bad capacitor in all the non-operating motors that I have rebuilt.rsh027 wrote:Model 510. I turned it on for the first time since I got it. Not the motor stuff! Take it apart only after it becomes absolutely necessary. Try Bill's suggestions first. Remove the motor belt until the motor is running properly(eliminates external drive train influences).rsh027 wrote:Thanks, looks like some serious maintenance is in order. I have the original manual, is this the best source for information on how to perform these tasks?
