mini is too mini for my 2 SPTs

Post by farley »

picked up a sander from a great guy for my mini.

I plan on putting the sander on the quill side as I can place it on "backwards" from the normal way and still have it run the correct directions.

Cut the mini correctly, but it's a little too tight about 6 inches too tight the power coupler won't fit to make the connection. This is with my band saw in place at the back end.

It came with some off set tubes, but that not enought. The Eccentric Mounting Tubes don't look like they would help enough.

It looks like I could make longer "plates" to off set the tubes more. Has any one else done that? Would it make it terrible unsafe. Since it's only a sander I don't see how any extra stress would hurt the headstock.

Or has anybody "welded" the two metal nuts together (don't know the word)?
One end goes into the SPT and the other on the SS.

I had the offset tubes and found them to give too much, I got rid of them. If you are going to increase the offset, make sure you get a thicker plate than Shopsmith uses (I think it was about 1/4" thick).

Yes, I agree the MINI can be too short for some attachment and SPT combinations. I started building what I call a "SHORTY" (18" shorter with 500 carriage and main table) a few years ago as I found this was the minimum length for using all the attachments and SPTs minus the Thickness Planer. I started modifing the motor for FWD/REV operation which makes the "SHORTY" a real craft/power station.

One other thought, Farley. You might consider making two sets of offset tubes with the heavier plate and mount both tools with them. That way each one will not be offset as much as just having one offset.

yea SDSsmith I agree with what you are saying.

the weight of the sander is too much for the length extension needed.

Share the distance with heavier plates would be better,

but I am not convinced by welding a spindle knob and an aux. knob together, this would have to be a perfect weld, would be neater.

ok looking closer I think the only solution to my mini and spt setup is to have two spt hubs welded together.

does anyone see any problems with that?

also on a general note.

why does SS have different type of hubs. One 5 groove for the SPT and the other 4 groove for the the headstock.

please don't say to fit their coupler, because in looking at it, the coupler doesn't have to have a 5/4 groove if the headstock/spt didn't.

inquiring minds want to know.

Just a thought, but how about setting up hub to hub about 1/8" apart or so and clamping a sturdy hose over both with two appropriately smoothed over (taped at the least) hose clamps?

If you have already provided this information, I apologize but which SPT are you wanting to mount on a mini.

Look at the 'coupler'. You will notice the headstock end has a spring inside. The purpose of that spring is to take up any excess separation and make sure the coupler is tight against the spt hub. If the separation becomes too much(loose headstock on ways) the coupler will slip away from the headstock hub and stop rotating the spt hub.

In order to prevent using the coupler installed backwards, the hubs are different(4/5 groove.)

IIRC you want to mount a bandsaw and a sander. Belt sander or strip sander? I would not want to have the bandsaw 'active' when sanding and vice versa!

This be the 'spider' couplings.
