Shop Smith Mark V

Just inherited a Mark V from my grandfather, apparently its a model 500, manufactured in September of 1982.

I called the company and they let me know I need to order manual 845435, so once I get that thing in hand and have a chance to read it from cover to cover, I might think about trying to actually use the thing.

I am pretty excited!:D

Congratulations and welcome to the forum.

You'll not find a friendlier or more willing to help bunch then the folks on this forum. They are willing to help you with suggestions and guide you in the right direction with any issues you might run across.

Congratulations on the new Mark V Model 500 and welcome to the forum. I'm sure that your grandfather would be pleased to know that it is being put to good use.

Waiting a little while, until you feel qualified to maintain this gem and to use it without hurting yourself, is probably a good idea. But, there might be another way to wait rather that just waiting. If you have not already done so, the Sawdust Sessions (available online) are great learning tools. The narrator, Nick Engler, does a great job.

The Sawdust Sessions are available [url=httphttp://www.shopsmithacademy.com/Sawdust_Sessions.htm://]here[/url] and are free. I'd recommend viewing them all but especially #21 thru #24 while you wait.

Welcome and congrats on the MkV. I'll just reiterate what's been said before, you won't find a friendlier group of people, always ready to help and answer questions. Be sure to read the manual and make sure the unit's lubricated before using...

Welcome to the Shopsmith "family".

I purchased my 500 back in '83 - and now I'm the Grandpa! Since then, my machine has undergone upgrades to 510, then to 520, double bearing quill, rip scale, and now, the ultimate....to PowerPro.

However, take your time. Become acquainted with your Shopsmith. The 500 is still a wonderful tool. Take special care to get it alligned properly. Feel free to ask questions.
