New Shopsmith owner, needs help!

Welcome to the forum Brandon. I used to be almost neighbors to you having lived in Palmdale back in the 80's. Moved to TN in 1990 so I could finish up my time at GM to get my retirement. I started out in woodworking in my 20's and my first table saw was a Sears table which you could mount your circular saw to. Got my Shopsmith in 93 and like you would like to get the new powerpro upgrade but budget will not let me at this time. As you can see we are a friendly bunch here. Glad to have you aboard.

Yea you are Absolutly right about the people on this forum, they are all a bunch of great people! By far the nicest most helpful forum I've ever been on!

Now tell me, how do you like it in TN? I'd love to move out of California sometimes, but I have a good job out here when the economy is good.

By the way I'd like to thank everyone for the warm welcomes. I'm really looking forward to many years of learning and sharing with this wonderful group.

Just a quick response to you question abut how do I like TN. I absolutely love living here. The majority of folks are easy going, friendly and always willing to help their neighbors if the needs arise. Like the rest of the country, the economy is still hurting but little by little, slowly picking back up.

Better than good ol Palmdale huh? haha! Yea thats the kinda place that I would love to call home.
Well back on topic! I was able to spend an hour or two on the headstock this morning and the motor sheave was stuck real good. I couldnt even move it at all with my hands. I put some zoom spout oil in it and was able to slowly work it loose. the upper sheave was stuck pretty good as well, but it was alot less adventurous to free that one up, thankfully! I also pulled the speed control assembly out and cleaned it all up and lubed it up with some graphite. Im not quite sure why but it is still not as smooth as I think it should be. I also put belt dressing on the belt while I had it off. Once I had everything back together I turned her on and oh what a sweet sweet sound! No vibrations, no rattles, nothing but smooth operation all through the whole speed range! Boy was I happy to see everything working as it should!
Now on to a question, does anyone have an idea as to why the speed control is not spinning real smooth? It seems like it gets stiff in a couple spots. It may just be me not knowing the "feel" of it but to me it seems stiff.
Hope someone can give some insight!

Normally, it will turn easier while increasing speed - turn harder when lowering seed.

My guess is the harder spots happen when lowering speed. If so, the motor sheave shaft needs more oil. Put some oil on the shaft as well as in that little hole. You should be able to pull the sheave open by hand and it should slide easily considering the spring pressure. Hint - it is easier to oil this shaft when in the drill press position.

Yea I will go back out in the garage and check things out again later, I may just be nit picking. Either way I'm happy I got it this far, but I still have to tension the poly V belt and clean the tables and tubes and accesories and what have you. But Im hoping to make sawdust soon!
