this product claims that it is "Guaranteed Rust and Corrosion Protection for: Steel, Iron, Brass, Copper, Aluminum, Silver, Nickel"
it looks a lot like the non-slip shelf liners that are a porous mat of beads. the label says that it contains sodium nitrate.
I bought a roll and used it to line a drawer that I am using to store steel bench planes. I laid a couple of planes on their side on the norust about 6 weeks ago. yesterday, I found that the sides laying on the mat now have a black pattern that matches the mat. there was also one small area where it looks like the mat bonded to one of the planes.
the black pattern does not want to come off with a dry wipe. I have not tried any solvents yet.
in fairness, both of these planes were used and from the same source with the steel very clean when I received them. I did not wash them after receipt. so there is a very small possibility that the problem is actually a reaction between a protective oil on the planes and the mat.
the good news: no rust on the planes and the patterning is on the side so it will not affect the normal use of the plane. other than aesthetics, the only problem would be using them on a shooting board if the pattern is stickier than the steel.
I am going to try putting some tissue paper between a plane and the paper and see if it will prevent the staining.
anyone else have any experience with this product?

follow up: I heard back from the fellow that I got those planes from.iclark wrote:in fairness, both of these planes were used and from the same source with the steel very clean when I received them. he has been using Johnson's Floor Paste Wax. after I passed along what I had learned here about the floor vs original Johnson's, I think that he is switching to the original.
so clean steel with a light coat of Johnson's wax tries to stain when laying on the Zerust drawer liner.
on a related topic, if someone wants a source of hand planes that have had their bottoms ground flat and the sides ground square to the bottom, I can recommend a really good guy.

zerust drawer liner
Dear IClark,
I am sorry that you had this problem with the Zerust drawer liner. It is most likely caused by a reaction to the coating on the steel. We have sold close to 500,000 rolls and this is only the 2nd case where there was such a reaction. A strong solvent will remove the material from the steel. If you contact our office at 4zerust@windstream.com I would be happy to replace the roll.

I have used a similar product, "without the advertised rust prevention chemicals". and had the exact same problem.iclark wrote:http://www.woodcraft.com/Product/202119 ... ce6de444df

I now store all my planes in old socks and other precious hand tools in rolls or wrapped up.
The pattern and stuck on material is easily removed with alcohol or Acetone, I don't remember which.
My planes weren't waxed that I remember nor was there any particular oil or rust preventative on them.

I am very positively impressed by your making the effort to follow up here. it is especially good to hear that a solvent will take the marking off since one of the 2 planes had been reground shortly before it went into the drawer.
I am also happy to hear that this is not normal. I really liked the concept of lining all of my tool drawers with your product.
in case it helps, the coating on the steel was the Johnson's Floor Paste Wax.
I will follow up at the email address.
thank you,
Ivan
