Drive Sleeve Assembly (518145)

I am in the process of installing a new Drive Sleeve Assembly (518145). As is frequently the case, the part has changed somewhat even if the part number is the same. Obviously this does not present a problem and only shows that Shopsmith is continuing to make improvements but it caught me off guard. I even checked with Bill Mayo. He has reassured me that there is no issue. I guess I am just paranoid.

Is the grooved pully on the new shaft removable or is it machined onto the main shaft?

I believe that I have heard that the set screw (and as a result the pulley) comes loose on the old version which would obviously cause a problem. If that is accurate, Shopsmith may have done this as a reliability improvement. That is my guess.

Are those spacers between the pulley and the bearings? Maybe it is keyed to the shaft and held in place by the bearings?:confused:

That new stuff seems to be all permanently joined, aluminum pulley on steel shaft. The new Power Pro idler-pulley-shaft is like that, too. So the Power Pro retro has both Drive Sleeve and Idler in this type of configuration. You can replace bearings on the drive-sleeve, but I don't know if you can replace them on the PP-specific idler shaft.

Hi Gang;
From what I can see inside the PP headstock that I just got yesterday, the bearings seem to have conventional numbers on them. So if someone put them on someone else can take them off. SS used to say in the parts manuals that the drive sleeve assembly was only available as an assembly and not as individual parts. I have replaced the 6205 bearings on at least a dozen headstocks.

After a quill is removed should there be ANY play in the white drive sleeve (part #57). The rest of the assembly seems immovable. I'm trying to narrow the cause of feeling vibration in the quill feed lever when extending the quill while the machine is on. The faster the speed the faster the vibration.
Mixed feelings is watching your mother in law driving off a cliff in your new Rolls Royce. :) :(

Check the straightness of the quill shaft from the arbor mount all the way to the far end of the splines.
