spindle adapter

Post by holsgo »

If you ever have or will buy a spindle adapter from Penn state industries there is one gripe I found (among others mentioned in other threads). The key for a 5/32 or 4mm doesn't fit snugly. As you can see here:

So what to do. I tried to buy one set screw and forget it without a $9 minimum order or high shipping costs. After searching I found the below link. They will let you order one 8mmx1.25x10mm set screw with a 4mm key. When you plan to order this adapter you should call this company and order a set screw as well. All it would take is one too strong a turn with the old set screw and you will strilp the key and permanently mount the adapter to your spindle. Or mount it until you drill it out.

This company is alowing me to buy one screw and just pay postage. Took me forever to find them on the internet though.

Is there something special about the set screw? I've picked up set screws at Lowe's , Home Depot and Sears Hardware.

It's not a 5/16 thread that shopsmith uses. Tried the easy way first. Lowes, HD etc. Just a warning to all of those that get this adapter. After I mounted a 3 jaw chuck at 4" with a backplate you can imagine that it should have the set screw tight. The mounted chuck weighs about 10 lbs. With the set screw provided by the manufacturer you'll be sure to strip it.

Anything wrong with drilling the hole to 5/16-18 tap drill size, and tapping it so as to use a std ss set screw????;)

Nope. Nothing wrong. Didn't have the tap. Can't beat a 30 cent solution. Whatever works. It certainly was easier to call them and get the stainless screw though.
