Quill travel length question

Post by hcbph »

Started using the 80's Mark V I received and was doing some horizontal boring the other day and noticed something. The depth stop goes to 4" but the quill only extended out around 3" IIRC.

Is that the normal extension it will achieve or is there something hanging up somewhere? I did some looking inside with a light and mirror and didn't see anything unusual and doesn't seem to be any binding etc when extending the quill while drilling. The drill stop was set to the max so I don't think that was the reason, just wondering.

Appreciate any info, thanks.

3" is not the normal full extension. It could be a burr on the quill interfering with the limiting set screw. You might try backing out this set screw that limits the quill travel located on top of the headstock casting. See if that has any effect on the travel. Personally, I would go as far as removing the quill and inspect the housing along the slot for burrs.

Try loosening the quill depth stop a bit. Mine loves to bind up (because it sits between 2 rough washers). As I plunge or retract it loves to mess with the travel and stop either short while extending or not retract fully. I learned to simply loosen the depth stop nut a few turns and it does just fine.
