IIRC, Propane is denser than air. If you slowly vent the tank with the vent facing up the air should vent off. I assume there are no interior baffles interfering with the lighter air escaping first. You need to consider just how much volume of air is contained (at a higher pressure) to indicate how long that would take. I think you can assume that volume to be at least equal to the volume of the tank when empty. Therefore it may take a bit long to get it all vented out.
Being an adventuresome sort, I would vent it slowly and check often for propane odorant.(outdoors and not near any ground depressions or sewers). Remember propane will fall to the ground after venting. That be where ya need to check for it(nose test). But that is me. Proceed at yer own risk and sense of responsibility.
If you are able to attach a length of tubing to the vent/outlet, you could test with an open flame rather than the nose. Just make sure the tubing is long and any already vented propane has dispersed before producing the open flame.
Be cautious!

let there be heat!
Rob and JPG, Thanks for the info. I vented the tank and was able to get the heater going. My local guy got home from hunting and called me, with exactly the advise you guys had! I did set the filler up for failure by not telling him it was new and I asked for only a 1/2 tank full because I was lifting it by myself. As I vented the tank and it cooled and it was clear that there was no where near a half tank. At any rate, I have heat and I learned a lot about propane in the process. Apparently, the purging process is to remove the pressured air in the tank, ( there for shipping). If it is not removed exactly my issue, can result) They also said that the process uses propane vapor to replace the air, not liquid. This removes air that might have water vapor in it from the tank. All can be accomplished after this tank is empty again. I seem to recall a similar process when I delivered anhydrous ammonia from COOP to farm as a kid. Thanks again guys!

I haven't been here in a while, but hopefully that will change now. I've been focused on a couple projects at work, and my internet access from home has sucked, so I haven't really had time and access. Plus, having my entire shop still (temporarily) packed up and inaccessible has put a damper on things. I'm really having sawdust withdrawal!
JPG - I'll get back with you regarding your PM as soon as I can find that file...
So what's been going on around here? Have I missed anything?

When we moved, I was hoping I'd have something in place by now. But it's been one thing after the other. My wife broke her elbow, we had to buy a new stove, had to have the house AC repaired, had to do a bunch of work on my motorcycle, a new set of tires for the truck, and on and on and now Christmas... It just seems to have never ended.
Right now, I'm looking at maybe late Spring or early Summer before I can get a workshop built. That's should nothing else major happen. It's frustrating, but it's life.
