used planer prep.
I just purchased a used SS planer. It appears to be in good shape, well maintained and is about 15 years old. Since I paid "way less than retail" I can probably spend a buck or two getting it into top shape. What things should I look for? This is a mark V mounted machine.
I don't have a SS planer, but I do know that there are some upgrades available for the earlier models, namely a dust chute and the knurled infeed roller, if yours doesn't already have the upgrades. Another good investment would be a set of replacement knives so that you always have a sharpened set ready to install. Check the SS web site for all parts and accessories.
I bought one used a while back - at a great price.
One thing to check is whether or not the table is perfectly aligned with the cutter head. There are instructions in the manual on how to do this but if you didn't get a manual order one from Shopsmith. Hopefully, you won't find a problem like I did. My planer surfaced boards so that one edge was slightly narrower than the other - made putting projects together difficult!
You can check by taking an old valve from an engine and cutting the shaft off so that when the top of the valve is placed on the table it stands about two or two and a half inches high. Then put it on the table and raise the table until the valve touches the left side of one of the tie bars (I think that's what they are called). Then check to make sure the valve touches the right side and both sides of the other tie bar. If it does then the table is parallel to the cutters and you can breathe easy. If not, you need to adjust the table - again, instructions are in the manual.
I hope this is clearer to you than it seemed to me as I wrote it. If not I can go to the shop and take a picture or three and post them.

I have read that these are not that easy to ship and that it is not uncommon to have hidden damages... mostly to the posts. Here is one post I was able to find right off but if you do more searching I think you will find more:
