Adding a bearing onto a Goldie?

I am thinking of buying a 1963 SS Goldie. With it's single quill it could have
.005 of wobble or more (according to the info video I watched here) I want to use it to craft tobacco pipes and need more precision to drill my air holes properly.

Can I add a second bearing to this unit ? and if so what is the cost and how difficult is it to change?

I am a newbie and really love these SS machines. This is a great forum as well.

After doing a search here, I believe I may need what is called a 2 bearing quill upgrade. I looked in the parts section and could not find it nor even a single bearing replacement. Hmm. <scratching head>

Thanks! That is a bit more money than I thought it would be. I was hoping I would not have to buy all that and just add a new bearing to the existing quill.

Would replacing the bearing in the single quill with a new high quality bearing improve its runout problems?

Thanks guys for all the advice.

I went to view the 1963 Goldie today. (to me, it looks more brown than gold. Maybe it should be called a Brownie.)

I checked all levers, locks, slides etc and all were a-ok. Overall condition was very nice and the gold (brown?) paint really looked nice. I flipped the headstck to a drill press and the locks and levers worked slick. The owner did not even know it flipped vertically, LOL. In fact I honestly think the owner never used it.

Ok, let's plug that badboy in: I flipped the switch for the motor and she ran good. I slowly inched up the rpm's and she went well up until I hit max then it went into low speed. hmm. I backed it down a tad and it went back up in rpm's. I did it several times and it did the same. Possible causes?

I also flipped the headstocks quill in and out and it seemed a bit scratchy but returned nicely. I had it in the fully out position and checked it for endplay and it was quite noticable, maybe approx .010 of slop. That is not good for what I will be doing.

He lost the jacob chuck so that would add on to my expense. No sawblades, no manual and no other goodies thrown in the deal. He is asking 400 bucks. i have other ones to look at that have more accessories for 400-500. (ie bandsaw, vaccum etc)

Thoughts, advice suggestions?
