8iowa wrote:I've had a similar problem. On one of my machines in the U.P. I had difficulty taking a saw blade off the shaft, and nothing else seemed to go on either. The problem was a very slight burr on the edge of the tapered flat, probably caused by a set screw that had loosened while the Shopsmith was running. A fine toothed file removed the burr and fixed the problem.

Look closely, it doesn't take much of a burr to keep the tight tolerance arbors from fitting on the shaft. I'm surprised that this problem hasn't come up more often.
I use a bench mounted wire wheel brush to clean the quill shaft. This works most of the time and can remove very small burrs. A set of precision needle files at http://www.harborfreight.com/12-piece-p ... -4614.html ($4.99) is excellant for removing any burr and cleaning/chasing bolt threads. Do not operate the motor when doing this task, only work on the burr and with a light hand pressure on the file.

NOTE: Do not use any type of sanding paper on the arbor quill shaft or inside the arbor as this is an almost press fit (arbor should pop when removed) and use of any sanding paper can remove too much material.

You guys rock!!! A thousand thanks. Picked up a stiff nylon bottle brush yesterday and the johnsons paste wax (original formula of course!) and got home last night and went to work with my mineral spirits. Within the hour I had every attachment slipping on nice and snug, but no sticking!

I then broke her in....used the table saw to take a hunk of makore (african cherry) and cut it down to a 3" x 3" x 9" block. Got it mounted up on the lather, and proceeded to tun a pretty decent looking pillar candle holder/column. At least being my first turning EVER I was pretty pleased. By the end of the evening my wife had it on the coffee table with a candle on top, so at least she liked it! Tonight it goes back out in the shop for finishing, looking forward to dabbling with that process.

All in all, the machine is superb, and i think, at least for now, will satisfy my every need. I am sure I will be on here much more as time goes on, and more sawdust collects in the shop.

I now have two stickers on the back of my truck (space reserved only for my true loves)... One is my University of Georgia sticker (I know...but everyone has a bad year once in a while) and a simple Harley logo outline. Might be time to start looking for a nice Shopsmith sticker to round out the back....

I'm not aware of any "Shopsmith" stickers, but I would be glad to send you a Florida Gator sticker for your truck.

I have owned three Hondas before making the plunge, and loved everyone...

first bike was a 1981 CB750K, then I had a 98 Shadow ACE 750, then my most recent was a VTX1300S, traded that last year for my dream bike, 2010 Street Glide. To boot I am friends w/ the owner of the local harley dealer, it was the bike he had customized to take down to daytona for 2010. He trailered it down, put a whooping 35 miles on it, and I picked it up upon his return!

Not the best pics:

And finally a picture of my last honda, with my lovely bride in the saddle...
