Looking for used jacob chuck and 2 or 4 jaw holding jaws

I am looking for a good used jacob chuck and also a 2 or 4 jaw lathe chuck for my 1976 SS. I looked on fleabay and they seem a bit pricey.

Yeah, by the time you pay for shipping on most of those eBay chucks, you could have bought a new one from SS. I've tracked quite a few and even rusty ones go for $20 or more, plus shipping.

I don't see any way around it though. For me at least, when a chuck is broken or rusted over there's no making it right again. I need a chuck for my 1962 brownie (I've decided I like that better than "goldie") but I really don't like the prices I see out there, especially if you want the Jacobsbrand!

The new Jacobs are not the same as the old ones. The old US made ones were sturdier but the chinese ones (which I just saw at Lowes) have a bit more plastic. Find an older US made one on ebay if you can.

The current Shopsmith drill chuck is a Shopsmith branded import jacobs-style chuck and is priced accordingly. The Jacobs 3326 and Jacobs Multi-Craft chucks come up on ebay all the time, are American made and can fit in a small flat rate box (~$5 shipping). If a person is patient, they should be able to get a true Jacobs chuck and key on the 'bay for under $30 delivered. Some of the earlier version Shopsmith Jacobs chuck had a chuck key that had a 5/32" hex cross piece. The chuck key could do double duty.

1) The current ss chuck is not made by 'jacobs'. Just a fact, not a judgement!

2) Only source for chucks with a 5/8" bore is new from ss or used from??

3) There are two 'former' ss chucks out there, the later multi-craft MC8K26 and the older 3326. Some prefer the 3326, but I see little difference quality wise.

4) FWIW, they ARE repairable(new jaws,sleeves). Mickyd has restored a grossly rusted one.

Not unless you bore out that 5/8-16 threaded area. Also, Shopsmith sold one other jacobs style chuck that was made in America...........hmmm trying to remember the brand, Cushman???? Yeah, that's it, some of the older Mark V/5's came with a Cushman chuck, also made in the good old USA.

Thanks Rod. Obviously, I don't know how to translate the specs provided to real world. I was also looking at adaptors and now I think I under why I was confused there too.

Thanks for the advice all! I just bought a SS and I am thrilled. I will post pictures very soon. I got a 1976 SS with a bandsaw and other goodies for 200US bucks. It is in excellent condition and had one original owner. It did not come with a drill chuck and coupler.

The new one from shopsmith does not look bad and the price is right? Do these chucks have any runout issues?

I am still searching for a good used inexpensive 2 or 4 jaw lathe chuck. I found new 4 jaw chucks on fleabay for 150. the 2 jaw lathe chucks are hard to find. I'd like to spend 50-75 bucks..yeah I know I am a cheapskate.
