Either motor failure or bearing seizing on MK V
Hi, Im new to these forums and have recently retired. I finally have a basement that I can stand erect in, with enough room to turn a 16' board around without taking it outside and carrying it back into the mancave. I have owned my MKV for 31 years and have only used it a few times. I got into a project recently and used the jointer, belt sander, moritse tools, drum sander, band saw, quite a bit. At the end of this project it seems the motor just doesn't want to go.
How hard is it to replace a motor and where can I get one to fit this 31 year old MK V. Any tips would be highly appreciated. Thanks
PS: the number stamped on the headstock vent is SS 143431 not sure if that is the unit serial #.

But at $358 dollars I would hold out here for more guidance and assistance.

There are a number of members that have upgraded to the PowerPro who might be willing to part with their old motor. Motors also come up on FEEbay.patom wrote:Thanks Terry, do you know if there is any other source for a replacement motor? $358 seems pretty steep.

You motor
Could you have it rebuilt? Most cities have a rewinding place somewhere. I was wondering, if you are sure it'a the motor? I had a starting capacitor that went out on a motor, and it was 20 bucks. I wonder if Graingers could match it up? jimsjinx
If you are a part time band leader, does that make you a semi-conductor? Where do all the "unguided" bombs go?

First have you done everything you know to blow it out and clean it up to make sure from all that work and dust your contacts are not just stuck and you are not really needing a motor yet. Look up on how to service and care for your motor first before giving up on it.
And Like Rob said one of the group might have one to offer later.
Got my extra to my brother for his old 500 to get it running.
Good luck and I am Envious of anyone that can turn a 16' foot board around and not have to go outside to do it.

Thanks everyone for your tips. Hopefully I can get the old girl up and running in short order.
whlayesmfs, you have no idea of some of the places I lived with head banging pipes, floor joices, columns etc. etc. The house I have now was a lake camp up here in downeast Maine that sat on posts. I had it lifted off the posts and set aside while a basement was dug and foundation poured. Then they came back with the crane and set her on the foundation. It's been a labor of love for over 8 years now. I don't have enough ground, permit wise, to build a garage workshop, so the basement is my 'man cave'. I'm just getting started down there now, lot's of work to do yet.
