Weekly Blog - December 10th

Post by john »

Finally got the computer rigged up again and glad to be back. Sure has been a lot of activity on the forum.

It has been a busy week or so, but not in the woodworking dept. The plasterer/painter did his bit (ceilings, high stairway and one small room) and then the rest is up to us so both my wife and I have been painting since he left. I can tell you there is a big difference between a professional job and ours. I asked him his secret and he said twenty-two years of practice. Well I have been painting since I was about thirteen, and I haven't mastered it yet! Still some to go but the worst is over until my wife decides on the next project.

I will hold my annul small show at the local seniors residence on Thursday but all I have left besides a couple of bread knives are left overs that I had last year. I am working on a small tea light candle holder similar to one in the Canadian Home Workshop magazine. It is made of contrasting 1/2" hardwood, mine is ash and padouk, with mitered joints for the small sides holding the top. They did not use the contrasting woods for the sides and I now know why. It is very difficult getting the different woods to line up when trying to glue the sides, (about 2" high), to the top. It's not finished yet but I will try to have a picture later. Other than that I have not had time to do much in the shop but I do have a request for a potatoe bin as a Christmas present for my daughter so I guess the next week or so will be busy again.

Well it's about time to apply a coat of paint to the second side of a door for the den so I guess my break is over.

Have fun & take care.

Have been trying to picture (in my mind) your problem with contrasting sides. As I don't know a thing about tea candle holders I'll wait for you photo. Glad you were able to sell most of your projects, and am surprised you still have a couple of bread knives. Did all of your trucks sell? Sure hope so, as there's no lead.

My week was finishing up the second shutter. Got it up today.

Chuck:

Those shutters look even better installed. Good job, and again my compliments on the photography.

Interesting about the trucks, my new ones sold but they were two log carriers and a tanker. Two transport trailers of the same design have not sold since 2004. I guess they are too plain. My wife suggested putting some signage on them to make them more attractive but I haven't done that yet.

I also have two neat racing cars with rubber tread wheels made from oak and walnut, that were made in 2004, but don't sell. In this case I'm sure it is a price factor ($25). They are almost indestructible and could be heirloom items, but do not attract the attention I think they deserve. Several of my grandsons have one. In their cases, I gave the cars a number matching their birthdays so they have something to remember.

I it is difficult to explain my miter problem on the candle holders but hopefully I will get a chance to take a picture before I offer them for sale on Thursday.
