I have one of those Rigid shop vacuums and it is relatively quiet with considerable suction. With my model, you can remove the motor and use it as a blower. Sometimes there's just too much suction, like when vacuuming a rubber floor mat, but the suction can be dialed back with one of those router speed controllers. The filters however are easily packed with fine dust and they make a mess keeping them clean. I use a 4" paint brush outside and occasionally use the compressor. I've been thinking about the Dust Deputy mini cyclone, but don't get much further than the thinking stage because of the added floor clutter involved. I've also thought about covering the filter with a nylon stocking or something to keep the fine dust away from the filter, but again just thinking.

If you go with the HF DC, make sure you look for a coupon. Puts the price down $130-140 as I recall.

Also, the included bag lets out a good bit of fine dust. See Bill Pentz' site about dust collection in general, http://billpentz.com/Woodworking/Cyclone/index.cfm.

I too have some respiratory issues. I think I am going to keep my eyes peeled for a nice used SS d/c and follow your advice and get a Jet air filter setup.
Today I pulled the trigger on a Jet Air Filter from Woodcraft. Check their web site for details. Fjimp
