And here is my rant back...
Hogwash... For every hacker trying to crack Linux there are 10,000 hacking and trying to infect Windows... And it will stay much like that for a while. Yes more will work at screwing up Linux as time passes but hardly in equal numbers. Not soon. I do run a Linux firewall BTW.
Linux isn't for everybody and I really hope it doesn't become that way because when it is it will be screwed up. I'll continue to to use it because it simply works... Unlike that piece of crap Vista the finally broke the camels back and convinced me to dump Windows. Hell, one Windows version "blue screened" on stage during its release. The Linux Community really cares about the OS's while MS only cares about making another buck. Go ahead and pay a premium price for Windows over and over and over again every few years. That is how they want it. I'll never go back. They have nothing to offer me. I will also continue to advise friends to at least putter with Linux (free) to see if they think it will serve their needs. Like I said, it isn't for everybody.
My favorite so far is Ubuntu.
90% of PC infection is caused by the finger that pushes the power on button by the stuff they open without thinking and all of the people out there still not running even basic protection.
OK, I'm done talking about this... Back to woodworking.

This is sorta like politics, Farmer. To each his own. I totally disagree with your evaluation of Microsoft shortcomings, as I have experienced very few of them and none since MSE, but you do have a right to your opinions.

Please remember though, they are yours and not everyone's.

FWIW, the Kreg Community has also sent an e-mail to members about the theme of this subject. It's not just here on this forum it's getting to be a problem everywhere.

It comes down to this, everybody needs a firewall and virus protection. If you know you have both turned on then your protected. If you dont know then you need someone (grandkids?) to set them up for you.

Sadly, this always seems to degress into a debate on the pros and cons of various technology. But the bottom line is, even the worst product is much better than NO proctection.

FYI at a simplistic level, a firewall is like the entrance to a secure gated community, its job is to refuse to give out the address of anybody in the community (i.e. to anyone who comes to the gate). Good to have!, right? Virus software finds and defuses the bomb that is in trunk of your Aunt Millies car (she has a valid pass to get through the gate so this is good to have too.

That is one of the best analogies for firewall and anti-virus I have ever heard.

For those of you who need these programs and are financially challenged or just cheap like me, I have used AVG free anti-virus and Comodo free version for years on my own, my kids and relatives both young and old with only one infection and that was a trojan that my young son got from clicking thru. They are not only free but are also rated near the top year after year. They are also very system friendly, meaning they are not resource hogs like Norton, basicly you don't know they are there except for the occasional pop up trying to get you to spend money on an upgrade. Which is not a big deal.
