This does not seem right. I got everything cleaned up (not shinny) and lubed, waxed, and put back together. Did not tinker with the quill, shaft, motor etc.
Ran a check by the book and plugged it in (no blade mounted).
I noticed that when the shaft spins it has an oscillation of approximately 1/32nd inch. This wouldn't bother my brother who still thinks building a tower with colored blocks is masonry but I kinda think it would make for a not pretty cut.
Is this normal? Attached are 2 pics. with a dental tool for reference.

NO, there is a problem. First,you need to remove the Spindle Knob (65) with the set screw. Does the quill shaft move inside the bearing or does the bearing move inside the quill housing. There should be a snap ring holding the bearing from moving inside the housing. I normally find the Spindle knob has slipped on the shaft so I tap the splined end with a piece of wood to fully seat the shaft into the bearing and then install the spindle knob tight againest the bearing and tighten it's set screw. When you refer to 65 in your post....the spindle knob, is it pictured here (attached). I do not have an owners manual if that is a page within. If the spindle knob is what is pictured as you may be able to see the set screw appears to have been replaced by a molten metal plug.

Thats lead filling in the hole dig it out and there is a set screw under it. No play left!
The problem was that the spindle knob was not seated against the bearing.
Anyway, I took out the spindle and checked it for wear etc. Looks like new. Packed some high temp bearing grease in the bearing and applied a bit to the splines on the spindle. Put everything back together and seated the spindle knob. No play in the spindle. Hope that was the issue at any rate.
