Shaper Rub Collars
Has anyone used ball bearings instead of the shaper rub collars? Any advantage?

I have not personally used rub collars with ball bearings with my shaper but I would expect that you would reduce the possibility of having the collar burn the wood. I noticed that one of the accessories offered for the speed increaser is the ball bearing shaper spindle and part of the spiel is to "end burning". This is also the case with router bits (ball bearing vs. rub).michaeltoc wrote:Has anyone used ball bearings instead of the shaper rub collars? Any advantage?

Here is a set of shaper rub collars that were sold by AMT when they were selling woodworking tools some years back. The bearing itself is 1/2" bore and 1 1/8" outside diameter. You can stack the steel collars on the bearing, giving you additional outside diameters of 1 3/8, 1 5/8, and 1 7/8". The washers act as keepers to hold the bearing and collars together. I don't know if anyone still sells a set like this, but Grizzly sells individual bearings or you can buy them in a set from them.
