testing a small motor

got my motor off my dewalt 788 scroll saw, don't even know if I ever get it back together, but

could I test the motor by using and extension cord with alligator clips on one end and clip the clips on wires of the motor.

If it runs then it's probably good--Right?

Clamp the motor so that it doesn't move. That way you have both hands free to control the wires. Try not to touch them (the wires that is), they bite.

ok that idea worked and I didn't light up.

so i assume the motor is ok.
