My dad found the manufacturer's web page and while I though I had it bookmarked I can't seem to find it. My switch is buried in a box behind my work bench which is buried behind a new milling machine. Hopefully my dad will chime in with the answer. Dad?
I had contacted the manufacturer as I was curious about the zero margin. Either they didn't understand the questions or decided to play stupid as I couldn't get an intelligent response from them. No doubt they were concerned that I would be using my tongue to test if there was voltage and would then be forced to sue them for millions due to the lack of tongue protection devices.
The switch sold by SS seems adequate, neither my dad or I have observed any troubles running our three dust collectors.

The lower amperage capacity of the remote control need not be a problem here. I am having trouble remembering the proper name at the moment but all you need is a proper relay. Your remote just operates the coil on the relay. The much heavier relay carries the load. It is a lot the the same way that the remote works but the added heavier relay can be heavy enough, depending on what you buy, to operate about any piece of equipment.
Not sure why I'm having so much trouble recalling the proper terminology at the moment but I'm sure someone here knows it...

If you have hooked up your 2 HP DC to 240V you can purchase a remote control from Woodcraft for about $75. If you are running it on 120V the cost will likely go way up, if you can even find one. It's all about amps.

On the Lumberjocks forum the 2 HP Harbor Freight DC has achievied near iconic status, and guys are gleefully running down to Harbor Freight with their coupons to purchase these low cost dust collectors, without considering the downsides, one of which you have discovered.

Once home, many discover that they don't have enough electrical capacity to run the thing. This can get real pricey, especially in the older home that may only have 100 amp service. Also, the low initial cost will be eaten away every month as you get your electric bill.

In a small garage or basement shop like most of us have, the DC 3300 begins to look pretty good in comparison. For one thing, 4" hoses are much more cumbersome than 2 1/2". Sixteen feet of 4" hose is a lot to handle and stow, not to mention step over. Family members may also object to the increased noise level of a 2 HP dust collector. The HF unit will also require the purchase of additional accessories and likely a new hood that captures smaller microns of dust.

With the hoses and accessories included, the present $449 sale price of the DC3000 looks pretty good in comparison, especially if the guy with the 2 HP Harbor Freight unit needs to hire an electrician. If Shopsmith would make the 42" one micron hood standard, the DC3300 would be an unbeatible deal. The simple fact folks, is that the 1/2 HP DC3300 develops the necessary velocity and capacity to do the job in a smaller home shop. I've given up trying to explain this on the LJ forum. The mistaken belief that "the bigger the pipe the better the flow" is too solidly ingrained - perhaps even with some members here.

The term that you are gropping for might be a "contactor".

A contactor is nothing more than a solenoid actuated set of contacts through which the source power is applied to the load contacts. Typically, the source power is not the same power as that used to actuate the solenoid. Often used in the starter circuits for heavy equipment.

Pennview just linked to an inexpensive one that is rated for 20 amps. Thanks Pennview! I just checked my HF unit with an amp probe and it pulls between 16 and 18 at start. Since it's vented to the outside, there's very little back pressure. So, I really don't think it will exceed the start amperage during operation.
My shop has 200 amp service so, there's no problems there. I've been running this thing for 5 years with nary a hitch.
I will agree that the 4" hoses do get a little unhandy at times. :eek:
I'm no rocket surgeon when it comes to air flow. If a 2.5"hose would do the trick, I suppose a guy could reduce the hose sizes between the saw and the separator. Good idea. I think I'll do that.
