Not sure what I got. 10E, 10ER or what. SN 69792

You know, outside of yours and MickeyD's ERs, I don't think I've seen any ERs that were red, except the ones from Australia.

The ER is a VERY DURABLE machine! Yours is over 60 years old, and just needs a re-furbish. I'm currently on my second and third machines. 2 of my brothers have one each, and a good friend has 2, too.

(Oh, the MkV guys are going to hate this.) I think the best Shopsmith, is the first one. (Except lifting it into drill-press mode. That cast iron is heavy!)

I got my first, without a single piece of paper, in the early '80s. (Yep, no internet!) Had to figure out what everything did, and I've still got all my digits.

Oh, a couple of other posts alluded to Skip. He is one of the best resources on the ER. He also runs (owns?) the ER group on yahoo. One of the best improvements to your machine would be one of Skip's DC variable speed motors. I wouldn't even consider running without mine.

I believe red is it's original color and I'll probably keep that color although I really like the black and the grey paint jobs. 60 years old, man I am getting so lucky. I got this ER I also got a Delta 14" band saw from WWII era and it goes through hard wood like it's not there. I am looking forward to actually using my ER.

Well you guys are very convincing. I only have $75 in this thing.
After reading the details of these wonderful restores I guess I could invest in some JB weld and baking soda. LOL
I'll probable need you fellas to prop me up from time to time as I post many questions and hopefully photos of progress.

The 10ER is a fantastic machine. I love both of mine. It might take a little work, but nothing that should intimidate you. Pretty soon it will be good as new.

I'm pretty certain that red is not the original color and that it was repainted somewhere along the line. The original OEM color was kind of a blueish gray color and I haven't heard of any others being different from that as came from the factory (except for a special chrome promotional/demo model). I think these machines were often repainted as the original paint wore off. One of mine had been repainted dark green, the other one sort of a pale green. At least that's what it looked like under all the grime.

With some exceptions, pretty much anything that will mount to the arbor of the Mark V will mount to the ER. Other attachments might require an adapter or might not work at all. If in doubt, you can ask here or on the ER group.

Not baking soda but Washing Soda.

Right, I read that where baking soda was placed in the oven for a while and made washing soda, that is why I said that.

Yep, that's right. I scoured my area for washing soda and could never find any, so I baked some baking soda and it worked just dandy.

Baking soda works also. When you bake it in the oven the 'hydrous' baking soda turns into the 'anhydrous' washing soda.

Then you dump it in a tub of water! Look up anhydrous!!!:D
