So what's it worth

just ran across a local listing for a Shopsmith, which rarely happens. This one is for a Mark 2, which I've never seen one listed here before. And I would love to have a second machine. So what is a running Mark 2 worth (and I know that depends on the market, but take a shot anyway.)? As best I can tell from the pics the only SPT is a jointer (which I JUST got one and haven't even gotten it tuned up yet, but still... two of anything should be good when it comes to tools, right?)

If it was available local to me, I'd offer $50 just to add it to my "collection" and wouldn't be upset if the offer was turned down.

The Mark 2 is a cheap model. Sort of a cross between a Model 10 and a Mark 5. Lacks the quality of either.

Useful perhaps for light jobs.

Maintainability [some parts] might become and issue with a Mark 2.

I know about the lack of quality and parts that are no longer available. My interest was picqued be the jointer that comes with it. I also thought maybe I could set up as a dedicated work center, either drill press or jointer. Of course, that wouild be after much cleaning, lubing, fixing, etc. I might call the guy and make an offer and hope he isn't too insulted.

On another note, last night I found an SS in a garage sale listing, and went to look at it this morning. It looks to be a 510 with jointer, scroll saw, conical sanding disc, biscuit jointer, accessories shelf and maybe more. Jointer and biscuit joiner are still new in the box. It might be a 520 because the guy said his dad bought it brand new in '04 (but the serial number was 061092) and used it once before health issues got him. Guy was asking $1200 but it might as well have been 12 million with my current assets. "sigh"

ALso, I'm thinking I could clean up the base and put a Mark V headstock on it, maybe one of them newfangles 1-1/8 HP ones.

I know what you mean about assets right now, I missed an old 500 the other day that I wanted to make a mini out of to power my extra bandsaw and jointer. It went for $250 and had a jointer with it. Saw it two days later on Craigslist now for $800. The $250 was a reasonable price and the $800 is way out of line. I picked up a 510 last summer at a garage sale with jointer and bandsaw for $300 and if you keep looking you will find some like that. Still looking for an older cheap unit to make the power station from. Like you said in our part of the country they are few and far between. If you ever want to try you hand at rebuilding an ER let me know and I can fix you up. Working on rebuilding my third right now.

I sent the guy an email, offering him $50 and an opportunity to get it out of his garage, pointing out that it was something made for Wards by Shopsmith for 3 years (1958-1960) and that parts were no longer available, and that I'd have to make a 50 mile round trip to do him this favor. No answer yet, we'll see.

MEANWHILE, I am going to have to start a new thread because as of about 3PM this afternoon I now own TWO Shopsmiths, but that is another story ..............
