Fresh Cut Olivewood

Post by hoagie »

SWMBO came into the garage the other day and announced the neighbors were cutting down the olive tree in the front yard. Walked over and ended up taking a full pickup bed load of branches, trunk and burl. This tree was over 30 years old and at the cut ends has some very interesting looking grain. Most of the trunk sections are 12-24 inches long. Some of the burl was cut out of the base of the tree, wedges and slices cut with a chain saw.

Next step is to cut some of the logs down into more manageable sizes for bowls, wine stoppers, pepper mills, S&P shakers, pens, etc. From what I've read, I will then need to seal the end grain and find someplace to store all the pieces. I've read that some have had good luck storing fresh cut lumber in paper grocery bags.

Any advice any of you old hands that have experience with fresh cut lumber in general, olivewood in particular, would be most appreciated. Hopefully, some months down the road I'll be ready to post some pics of finished projects.

I think that's for freshly turned green wood. What are ya going to use to seal the ends?

I had thought using Rockler's Green Wood End Sealer would be a good choice??
